[Suggestion] Creating a New Open source Contributor Reward Platform based on SP delegation
Do you remember Utopian?
From the beginning of Steem until last 2018, Steem had Utopian, a strong initiative that enabled the continued prosperity and improvement of the ecosystem.
Utopian had have been a platform on the Steem blockchain which rewards various contributions to open-source projects. They do this by giving out high-value upvotes to articles with details of the contributions made to open-source projects. Contributions are curated by moderators and they get a certain score which determines the value of the upvote.
Utopian is currently out of service. See related articles here
Providing a means for open source contributors to earn is something we really need right now.
- Utopian was the first PoC platform on Steem to reward open-source contributors via a blockchain-based reward mechanism
- Utopian had have been facilitated over $1.5M in crypto incentives for open-source initiatives
- Utopian had have been the first PoC platform to incentivize contributions beyond the code, including copywriting, graphic design, data analysis and more
Why Steem needs an SP-based incentive program
Steemit DIP, recently announced by Steemit Inc(@steemitblog), is a new TIPPING POINT to kick off a bright future for the Steem ecosystem, promising developers a reward for their hard work and time.
The Steem community is revitalized again on the news that a total budget of $450,000 per year will be supported for DIP, and many users are expecting to see the upgraded UI/UX of Steemit.com.
Although the budget is relatively small compared to the Grant Program of huge public chain ecosystems such as Ethereum and BSC, this is definitely the most surprising news among recent Steem news.
However, Steemit DIP is focused on the improvement of Steemit.com, and Steem is a social media ecosystem, and as before, a support program for the continuous development of various DApps and 3rd-party front is required.
Steemit DIP can help improve Steemit.com's functionality and build more infrastructure, but it does not apply to the development of new DApps or 3rd-party frontends. (At least when I checked that announcement)
We need another initiative to continue to encourage building open source projects on Steem.
What is an open source project?
A project becomes open source when its codebase is public and editable, usually hosted on Github. Anyone can review, use, modify and distribute the project by following the open source license
- Do you often contribute to open source project?
- Do you have experience using an open source project?
- Have you found bugs or some kind of errors on any open source project and you want to report?
- Or do you want to suggest some features and ideas be implemented in an open source project?
- Do you have any development ideas that you want to share?
- Are you searching for contributors to help you build your open source project?
Have you answered "YES" to any of the above questions? If so, you are the one who can be rewarded for contributing to open source projects.
The categories above have existed on Utopian before, but are a great example of where everyone can participate in a variety of tasks and get rewards.
Rome wasn't built in a day
Utopian had a variety of participants, including sponsors who were willing to lease Steempower, moderators who set up curating standards and read and comment on all relevant posts, and developers who came up with great ideas to launch Steem-based DApps.
Assuming we collect 50k-100k SP each from the @misterdelegation account, which currently holds around 2.5M SP, and from the main witnesses, we can create around 4M SP, which is enough to create a new Utopian platform. (The power will be even stronger if individual sponsors are included here)
Of course, various tasks are required, including developing a new platform, establishing curation rules, and recruiting moderators. But more important than anything else is how many community members agree and support this proposal.
Many of you are well aware that a lot of great projects and developers went through Utopian over the past few years before the tragedy of the Steem and Hive fork. We need to promote the prosperity of the Steem ecosystem through the rebranded Utopian along with the Steemit DIP.
Please leave your opinions in the comments
This post is still just an idea, but it is worth considering seriously. Through this, we may be able to meet various things such as:
- Wrapped Steem(wSTEEM) on Tron network
- Bridge service between Tron and Steem
- Steem-based DeFi protocol
- A service that connects Steemit and other social media
- DApp based on Steem's PoB mechanism
- Splinterlands, a game that can attract large numbers of users

I support this idea. We can make a DAO for this new Utopian project. I think all the top 20 witnesses & well known Steem developers have to join a discord/telegram channel for group discussion.
@blacks, @winkles, @hafizullah, @moh.arif, @rex-sumon, @shuvo35, @kingporos, @rupok, @alsarzilsiam, @tangera, @nusuranur, @ayrinbd, @swagata21 & @faisalamin
That's a great idea to join a discord or telegram channel for group discussion. Because that will help us to share our idea's with others.
In my startup on Steem, I love utopian, but it goes down. To start this as a new project will be great and it helps to add quality work to Steem and it also helps to get more traffic. @blacks @rme @donekim
A really nice idea. We all need to discuss and talk about this.

I don't recall all the details of Utopian but I think it was somewhat complicated, with project approvals, a need for vetted moderators, etc. What might be more practical is something more like Actifit for coders: you do a microblog about the code you modified that day, keyed to some checkin to a repository. That gives coders some incentive and socially-approved way to engage with the chain even if they don't have some big milestone to talk about.
Utopian may have intended to prevent abusing or wrong choices, and to provide more equitable compensation to contributors, but the decision-making process seems to be complicated and time-consuming. Tbh I don't know the exact mechanism of Actifit, but as you explained, it looks like I need to dive deep into it. Can you give me a link for reference?
Their website is Actifit.io, although even their system is overcomplicated with their own token. The basic gist is that they have an app which interfaces with the pedometer function of a smartphone, so you can make a post to the blockchain that has an app-confirmed count of your steps and a little micro-blog you write about your activities that day. They have some moderation to prevent people from exploiting the system, and the smartphone-app-based nature of the interface makes it harder for exploiters to get upvotes for multiple accounts.
I think the benefit is more social than technical: it's a "big" account saying "If you make a post that satisfies conditions X, Y, and Z, I will upvote it even if it doesn't look like a traditional 'high quality' social media post". That's good for people new to the platform who might not know anybody willing to upvote them. And it's also good for people who might question whether what they have to say is 'good enough' to justify a blockchain post -- the ecosystem around the app establishes the norm that a stepcount of 5k or more accompanied by a microblog is a valued post.
The analogy would be that writing "lines of code" could be something worth rewarding, just like getting steps in, even if it doesn't exactly look like a traditional blog post. I think there's a natural inclination of software developers to only want to post things when they have something interesting to show off, which leads to a pattern of a low number of posts rather than consistently engaging with the chain.
I would definitely come back to this platform again if something start again in steemit
응원 합니다.
