Igniting the imagination and creative energy ⚡️
Role-playing games - real role-playing games - offer a journey into the realms of the imagination.
Old school role-playing games - my favourite is DragonQuest ("The Fantasy Role-Playing Game"), as pictured - offer adventure limited only by the players' imaginations.
They are a masterclass in creativity, and the more the game is played, the more intricate, nuanced and powerful the imaginative realm becomes.
One player (in DragonQuest the Gamesmaster, or GM) creates a world - a world! - in which other players adventure. Cities, forests and oceans. Trails through hills. Snow-capped mountains. Oceans teeming with life. And caves, dark and cold.
Other players take on the role of their characters (unique individuals with skills and abilities!) and adventure through the scenarios designed by the GM (hence the name role-playing). In search of treasure, fun and and adventure the characters encounter all manner of other inhabitants in the world, friends and foe, humanoid and mythical monsters. And as they travel, they gain experience, build their skills and enhance their abilities.
By testing the boundaries of the world as set by the rules of the game and their interpretation by the GM, the players, and the GM, delve ever deeper into the imaginative world they co-create through the simple act of playing a game and having fun.
There is real magic in this. Magic beyond the spells and enchantments of the game itself.
The real magic comes in the form of the creative energy ignited through this process.
For me, it is an enduring source of creativity which has nourished me since I was a kid.
DragonQuest was SPI's fantasy role-playing game. It is now apparently owned by Wizards of the Coast, but they don't give a toss.

I have known a couple of people that don't seem to get that roleplaying is exactly that (not being obsessed with the game rules/mechanics and relying entirely on the dice rolls). One I never played with but got told about by players that had played with them before, the other I did play with and he may as well have just handed us scripts (all of us are fine with drama but that's not what we were there for y'know?).
Roleplaying with kids is awesome fun crazy times XD Well it was with the recent group of homeschooled kids I had playing Changeling: The Dreaming, poor things want me to run more games but I just don't have the time to set them up now!
Wizards is probably concentrating too hard on Magic: The Gathering, seems some new sets got released recently and everyone went nuts (the three boys in the house all play).
Haha that sounds annoying. Game mechanics is the means to an end, and the smoother it is, the more enabling it is for role-playing.
You're right about kids too - my daughter has had one adventure now, and she's all "when can we play next? when? when!" She's loving it :-)
Don't know about Wizards though. They've sat on it since TSR went bust. (TSR bought the ailing SPI and then junked all the good staff and let the great games wither...)
But I'm not bitter (after all these years hahahaha)
Love your post 🌞
I have this "bad" habit of using the game rules/mechanics as a guideline XD
LoL you've created a monster! XD
Well what I very vaguely meant was that MTG seems to be Wizard's flagship and they seem to put a lot more effort into their card games than anything else. Like I didn't even know they had roleplaying games.
I guess that's my point. Neither do they - unless it's D&D 🙃
XD
DnD was the first tabletop I ever played. And the one I liked least XD I was rather surprised I didn't enjoy it much as I'd played Baldur's Gate and the expansions prior to then and enjoyed those. But it was the gateway drug XP
But yeah - point taken about MTG
It is a game worth engaging in. I love GM and other characters.

I love that @drwom
Thanks stbrians
Thanks @drwom I haven't tried this but can relate endless hours on the final fantasy game brought many smiles to my face, and enriched my imagination !
hahaha - cheers!
I never had the chance to play games like this or D&D, mainly because they weren't a big thing where I live, but I couldn't help but imagine how it would've helped my creativity. I used to just craft universes from a blank slate, maintaining them for years. Look at me speaking as if it were the past. It could've gone either way though. I could've easily been burnt out by everything instead of further flexing my creative muscles.
Never too late :-)
Still no one to play here with unfortunately haha!
