Caffeine, Steroids, and Myrtle the Prostitute

in #writing7 years ago (edited)

My best friend showed me a very cool way one time to memorize 52 shuffled playing cards in under 60 seconds.

The method is simple, but you need to know a few things about my friend Ed before I share it.

Ed's imagination was pretty wild. You could find him doodling on a napkin while waiting for his lunch, or even staring out our office window. I'd like to begin this brief story about Ed staring out of our office window, and sharing with you what he saw.

Trust me, this story plays a huge part in how you too will be able to memorize 52 shuffled playing cards. The punchline is near, I promise.

Ed had a crush on a lady named Myrtle that stood out in front of the coffee shop. We always pointed out that she was in the business of prostitution because of her frequent in and out of cars. A different car would pull to the end of the corner, she would hop in, and then a few minutes later she would get dropped off. I know, a little judgemental, but her clothing and the same Johns screamed lewd behavior, RED ALERT.

Well this particular day, Ed called me over to the window and asked me a question.

_"Ahmad, do you want to know why I'm always at this window?" _

"YES, I do!!" I exclaimed.

Finally I will share with you Ed's method!!

"Well Ahmad, you know we have a lot of things riding on the success of how we do. We've been stuck in this office training for the United States Memory Championship. My weakest event has been memorizing the 3 decks of shuffled cards. Well, not any longer! I have Myrtle to thank. Ahmad, fill in the blank and Memorize this..."

He unfolded a sheet of worn paper with the following on it:

THE 52 CARD METHOD:

King — Famous Male duo
Queen — Famous female duo

Jack — Famous Evangelist

10 Mogul Woman
9 Mogul Man

8 Steroid Body Builder Woman
7 Steroid Body Builder Man

6 Sexy females
5 Wild males

4 Top Female movie stars
3 Top Male movie stars

2 Woman in Sports
Ace Man in Sport

Ahmad, for the SUITS think:

Diamonds — wealthy people
Hearts — kind people
Clubs — crazy people
Spades — comedians or funny people

"Ahmad, Myrtle's world is my memory castle. She does the same routine everyday. I place these cards along her route. My game is placing the 52 people along the route."

"Ed. You're crazy. I need some caffeine for this. Let's go say hi to Myrtle."

REFERENCE:

This method was actually found in a great book I read a few years ago. It's titled: Moonwalking with Einsteinby Joshua Foer. It took me two days to memorize the deck in under 2 minutes. I'm a work in progress. I found that the more the characters generate an emotion within you, the more you will remember them. The more wild, sexier, and outrageous you can make the images, the more you will remember them. I use to place all 52 shuffled cards/characters along a path. The path was the route I drove to work, starting from my bedroom to my clients home.

ONE MORE THING

At the time of doing this, I was eating super clean. Similar to all the foods that @owoblow-steemit suggest to eat for sharper memory in this post: Foods That Help Students Improve Their Memory.... Brain/Health Foods For Students

Sort:

I dabbled with memory enhancement skills several years ago, but never dived in deep enough to benefit fully. But the trick you list is similar to one that I learned.

Thanks for the book recommendation. It looks like a great read for taking this further.

Great post, I enjoyed you story.

I am a huge fan of nootropics... smart drugs... really can activate your creative side... At one time I had several signature stacks that I used for different occasions. Thanks for the comment!!

Back in the day I spent near enough to one bitcoin on noots that you can't but in Australia when I tild my wife @insideoutlet that my $300 something purchase cost us 10k in todays value.... well you can imagine

I am thoroughly confused... So do you assign people to the cards and then make a story out of it to memorise it?

Great work on using the #dolphinschool tip as I read it to the end and then reread and reread it to try and get it. I am still lost. sorry lol..

Uh thanks... I think that was a compliment...🤔 😜 Left it a little vague to increase questions and talk afterwards... yes each card gets a particular celebrity label... your aim is to first learn the names associated with each card. Once you can do that THEN you begin using your personal “mind castle or route” (something extremely familiar) to place whatever cards you receive each time you shuffle the deck. Also I was trying to pretend I was selling the book, “moonwalking with Einstein...”The goal as a seller, I assume, is to let the product truly clarify any ramblings of the author... leads to a click on the sales page, hopefully... higher conversions... Btw... I plan to follow all of my class buddies slowly..(bandwidth issues earlier).💪😎👍

Thanks for clarifying more, its not you, its me lol... All good with the follow.

As for bandwidth issues, that sucks, I have heard a few people having issues, I never personally had any issues, I checked steemd often at the start and it was always close to 100%, mine is at 98% now. I hope it gets sorted for you soon :-)

You did great with the assignment today! Its seems you really took notes from todays lesson. Job well done!

Such an amazing thing so say! Btw... I love your 3 b’s...

Wow! I'm obviously not asking enough from you guys. The posts today are brilliant, and this is no exception. So, now I need to know, is Myrtle real? The house we just moved from, had a paved alley behind. We used to catch working girls there with guys in cars and chase them off at least two or three times a year. Great post, incredible writing, solid imagery, good layout. One Critique, your headline promised me three things, but I only saw one. Where were the caffeine and the steroids? Awesome post, definite contender for revenue share!

Hey! Glad you liked it. I really worked on implementing your suggestions and used your critique from my previous writing to tighten things up. I definitely see how my writing has improved a ton (my wife’s an English lit major and likes the way I’ve been writing recently), thanks to you. I referenced the caffeine in the last few sentences at bottom(yeah I know-not enough right?) & tried to tie in steroids in with one of the memory mnemonics included in the method... I would have done more with the idea but was trying to keep the word count close to 250 as possible... oh btw Hemingway Editor is god! Hemingway was slapping my MacBook Air off the desk each time I ran on too long... loving #dolphinschool

Yeah, but it's limited. It's grammar suggestions are shit. LOL but, for readability NOTHING beats it, other than a good human editor.

yes Myrtle is real... right on the corner of 27th and GhatCha Ave..

This is a fantastic post, really used the assignment as inspiration...I saw the moments where you hooked me and kept me reading clearly throughout. Entertaining, easy to follow, great storytelling! See ya back at #bootcamp.

Excellent title. I was ready to pass on by Caffeine and Steroids, but Myrtle the prostitute made me curious. And the whole story was engrossing.

Very well done. Powerfully written. beautifully formatted. perfect use of the bucket brigade. Bravo!
