줄기로 다른 것을 감고 오르며 5월에는 흰색으로 피기 시작하여 노랗게 또는 붉게 변하여 금은화라고도 합니다.
꽃은 말려 해열,해독에 약재로 쓰고, 인동차로 마시기도 합니다.
관상용으로도 많이 심어요.
김대중 대통령이 감옥에서 모진 겨울을 이겨내는인동초에 빗대어 자신을 인동초라고 하기도 했습니다. 인동초 하면 김대중 이라고 생각하는 분들이 많습니다.
역경을 견디며 민주주의를 지키려는 의지와 신념을 갖고 희망을 잃지 않는 생명력의 상징으로 기억되고 있습니다.
