The 2018 Black Bull of Clarence: A strong addition to the Queen’s Beasts series...

Continuing my Queen’s Beasts silver series, today’s focus is on the 2018 2oz Silver Black Bull of Clarence. While it might not have the mythical allure of the Unicorn of Scotland, the royal prestige of the Lion of England, or the sheer cool factor of the Red Dragon of Wales, the Black Bull still holds an important place in British heraldry and the reign of Queen Elizabeth II.

The history behind the Black Bull

The Black Bull of Clarence is a symbol of power and strength, originating from the House of York. It was closely associated with Edward IV, the first Yorkist king of England, and later adopted by Henry VIII to reinforce his lineage’s legitimacy. This powerful beast has been used throughout history to symbolise dominance and resilience, fitting qualities for a nation that has endured through centuries of change.

The coin, like the others in the Queen’s Beasts series, was designed by Jody Clark, the same artist behind the fifth and current coinage portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. The reverse features the Black Bull standing defiantly, its muscular frame gripping the Royal Arms shield of the House of York. The shield itself is quartered, displaying the fleurs-de-lis of France and the lions of England, a reminder of England’s historical claim to the French throne.

The obverse carries Jody Clark’s portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, along with the usual inscription:

ELIZABETH II·D·G·REG·F·D·5 POUNDS

While the Black Bull of Clarence may not have the immediate appeal of the Lion, Unicorn, or Dragon, it remains an important part of the Queen’s Beasts collection. It represents a pivotal moment in English history, tying together the wars of the Roses, the Tudors, and the legacy of the British monarchy.

For collectors and stackers alike, this 2oz silver coin is another worthy piece in a series that continues to capture the imagination of those who appreciate history, heraldry, and, of course, precious metals.
