My 2014-P Wedge-Tailed Eagle – A Modern Classic in the Stack!
One of my favourite slabbed coins in the stack has to be my 2014-P Australian Wedge-Tailed Eagle, graded Gem BU by PCGS. Not only does it shine with crisp detail and full mint brilliance, but it also marks the very first release in what has become one of Perth Mint’s most successful modern bullion series.
Designed by John Mercanti, the former Chief Engraver of the U.S. Mint, this coin is the result of a unique collaboration between American design and Australian craftsmanship. The reverse features a powerful image of Australia’s largest bird of prey mid-flight, wings extended and talons at the ready — a dramatic and majestic pose that has made this series a collector favourite.
As a first-year issue with the sought-after "P" mintmark, my 2014 example holds even more significance. Its early release status, beautiful strike, and limited mintage make it a standout coin that’s not just about the silver weight, but the story it tells and the legacy it started. Whether you collect slabs, love Perth Mint pieces, or just appreciate great modern design — this eagle soars above the rest.
Have any of you got a Wedge-Tailed Eagle in your stack? I'd love to see it. Drop a pic in the comments and let’s keep stacking!
