RE: Sort By Total Human Eyeball Views Tab: A Request To The Devs

Doesn't look promising. The whole idea of having a site that is created in order to find popular reading content, which would grow user base is not considered important. Wow, just wow. The divide between developers and people grows wider.

Sort:

The main problem with it is that if eyeballs were all it took to get a lot of attention, people would game the system to get a lot of eyeballs. (It is not hard to simulate a lot of people viewing the page.) Making the system so that it is not easy to abuse would require a more significant change. Stuff like that is good to have, but it is not at the top of the priority list.

All metrics (number of votes, number of views, number of comments) that could be used for selecting content or for (semi-)automatic curating can and will be manipulated as soon as there is the slightest chance of these metrics' influencing rewards. It would also be a problem for my proposal here.

I'm not sure we should let that stop us as the threat of manipulation can kill almost all initiatives, leaving us powerless. Maybe it would be better to just do it and worry about manipulation later, and then strike down hard on any and all manipulators we can find.

Some will argue that the code is the law, so manipulation beyond intended use is allowed, but I don't find that very convincing.

good points. I agree that it should not stop us from moving forward.
