do you think by having this exist that people will begin gaming it even though there is not a reward structure in place? Don't you think that humans will be able to tell which posts are gamed (with bots) and which ones are actually popular reads? We could as a group downvote any posts that are clearly gamed....
I just created a github account and added my opinion. i've finally caved in.....
When money is involved (and more views translates into a better opportunity to make money) it will be gamed (unfortunately).

you're missing it. The view count tab will not be monetized. Humans will need to pick from that list. I think it's worth a try. The other option doesn't look good.
I realize that it will not be monetized, but it will basically become a tab that gives extra exposure to whoever can develop the best view counter bot. The real humans that the tab would intend to help would be buried.
Yeah, but sadly people would still find a way to have bots view the post, thus moving it to the top of the list. While the views themselves wouldn't be monetized there is plenty of value in being at the top of the list.
Sure, you could have it track views and try to determine if someone used their bot to game the system for views but what does that really accomplish? If you are going to downvote a post because a bunch of bots viewed it, whats to stop that bot owner from viewing any random post and watching the masses show up to downvote it?
