Actually the Steem system isn't just a website. You can access and post to Steem without going to Steemit. Take a look at busy.org or chain BB, or esteem. Steemit != Steem

You're correct @neoxian, I should have been more clear.
Steemit is a blogging site owned by a corporation. Technically all the blogging sites could disappear and Steem could still be of value because of the transactional speed and feeless nature of the Steem blockchain.
