Sleep problems?
I live in Spain and yes it’s summer and yes it’s hot and humid at night. So sleep problems are something I’m very aware of. Summer here can be brutal. I find it brutal and would love to just go away for three months to cooler climates. But unfortunately that isn’t possible.
So the tips that help me are as follows…
Take a siesta. Even if you don’t want to give into it do it! It doesn’t matter if you fall asleep or not. The fact that you are laying down and closing your eyes can train the body to accept it. I fought it for years because I wasn’t an old person. I was young and had too much stuff to do. I soon realized it was nothing to do with being old! It was common sense. There’s a reason the Spanish do it.
So now I try to take some shut eye at the same time each afternoon. After lunch after my food has been digested a bit I will lie down. I pop some soothing music (it can be any music you like) on and lie back with a few crystals on me. The crystals aren’t compulsory but they do help. There are certain crystals which aid sleep such as amethyst, quartz, Celestite, charoite, chrysoprase, Howlite, rose quartz or sodalite but if you don’t have any of these don’t stress just pick up a crystal you do have. It can even be a stone you have found on the beach or on a walk in nature. Stones (and crystals) have a strong grounding energy. This is the reason for having one next to you while you take a siesta. They help your energy connect to natures energy. This connection makes the body feel more relaxed and will help it relax more easily.
It is thought that a Power Nap of 10-20mins is enough to reenergize the body. Some like an hour and if you have the time that’s great, if not a Power Nap will work wonders. These power naps allow the body to get some rest so the lack of sleep doesn’t get to the point where we are too tired and the body goes into overdrive. This is not a good feeling.
Avoid drinking too much caffeine in the afternoon because that can affect your quality of sleep at night. I usually have a cup of coffee in the morning and that’s it.
Also avoid sugary items just before going to bed because they can wake the body up and give it a surge of energy, which you don’t want before sleeping. Also when the sugar rush starts to drop it leaves the body very unsettled which can interrupt sleep patterns. Don’t forget that alcohol is high in sugar. Sometimes it can relax us and we fall into a lovely relaxing sleep but the body soon becomes used to the amount and then it doesn’t work unless we up the amount. So you can see that this can become a slippery slope.
It’s important to try to keep the body out of the over tired state. That way you have a chance of getting some sleep at night. A little nap at midday helps prevent the crankiness of not sleeping at night.
I even sneak in a little nap in the winter when I feel my energy levels are low.
Sleep is the time when the body works on cell healing etc. It’s an important time for the body. So if it can’t at night then the next best time is when you are relaxed. So a little siesta is perfect.
