RE: Quark Fusion: The Discovery That Almost Wasn't Published

in #science8 years ago

If I remember correctly Quarks were just theoretical particles when I was studying physics in Naval Nuclear Power School. Just thinking about these things makes my head hurt now 😄

Population is directly proportional to the availability of controllable energy sources. Just to maintain our present population takes a massive amount of energy, for it to continue to grow we would need even more sustainable energy. Any disruption in the usable supply of energy would cause a population reduction somewhere, and probably lead to war over resources.

It would be nice to hear, and it would ease my fears to know that a fusion reactor that was capable of supplying the world with unlimited clean energy had been invented and put into operation. My worst nightmare is another nuclear accident at one or more of our current fission plants that leads to a meltdown and more devastating pollution.

I am of the opinion that we have not heard the last from the Fukushima disaster, and I am convenced that it is only a matter of time before other power plants undergo disasters that rival that one or are even worse. So I think that it is very important for us to find new sources of energy, and maybe even better delivery systems to get that energy to the location where it is needed in a more reliable way.

I agree, energy is the life blood of a technological society. In some ways society can improve the efficiency of power generation, whether it be from solar, wind, ocean waves, or fossil fuels. High efficiency solar cells would be fantastic.
I live in a windy area, hardly ever a calm day. It would be nice to have a few wind turbines that are quiet and efficient, so that homeowner associations would permit them.

Breakthroughs in science seem to be happening at a faster and faster pace. Someone is bound to come up with an idea for a new energy source one day.

And yes, it makes my head hurt too when I think about the days I was studying quantum physics in a graduate degree program.

Have a great week!
Steem on,
