Introduction to Mindfulness
When you are sad did you ever feel like your sadness will stay forever and you will not able to survive. That is actually really common, so you are not alone. The reason for this is human brain has huge tendency to focus on negative things. When i say things it refers to negativity in any topic. For example, you may win the lottery but still sad about your 100$ parking ticket.
Why? Because we overestimate negative events and underestimate positive events. How can we equally evaluate positive and negative events?
It has actually simple answer. MINDFULNESS.
Mindfulness is really popular in these days because it really works! You can increase your psychological well-being through mindfulness and research supports this. The key to mindfulness is being present in the moment. Try not to focus on past or future, just stay in the moment. When you think about mental illnesses this makes sense actually because mostly depression is related to focusing too much on past and anxiety is related to focusing too much on future.
How can we use mindfulness to enhance our well-being?
First of all it is a process and it develops through practice. Thus being mindful takes some time, be patient! Awareness of this information has important role for the process. Embrace yourself just the way you are. Do not judge yourself with where you are. You may fall, feel sad, depressed or something else. All these are okay because you felt this way before and get over it. So you will survive again. Think about this!
Mindfulness is not pollyannaism like but instead mindfulness refers to living negative emotions, acceptance of negative emotions, embracing negative emotions and the awareness of temporariness of negative emotions.
