The Travel Insurance Checklist That You Must Know

Before you travel, there would be a time where you hesitate whether or not you should or shouldn't get your travel insurance. You'll probably think that it's unnecessary and told yourself that nothing bad it's going to happen and it's going to end up as an extra expense. So, why not just save the money for something else like for an activity or etc. Well, if you have that thought, you should stop and think twice before making any decisions.

Here's what you need to know about travel insurance and some factors you need to know before deciding on one.

The 'Why's' you need travel insurance

If you own a home or a car, for sure you have your properties and vehicle insured, so why not invest in yourself too? Just because you're going abroad for a few days or not, it doesn't mean that you'll always be so lucky to come back in a perfect piece. There are always unexpected events happened without us knowing ahead and incidents that we couldn't avoid it. Also, only if we all have side-kick to know what's going to happen in the future.

So, why do I need a travel insurance?

As I mentioned earlier, anything could happen. Especially when you're abroad and there's no one there to help you out, the only way you can comfort and to secure yourself with all these unfortunate events are by travel insurance. For an instant, losing a camera may not seems to be that serious but what if you can get yourself a new camera without having to burn your pocket for a new one? Also, what if I tell you, you can get insured for your medical bills while without signing a big cheque? Doesn't that sound like a good investment that anyone can get?

The thing is, travel insurance is an investment that provides a return just for you but also for the persons you care and love. Travel insurance is a security that let you travel without worries and concerns and it's possibly the best travel companion that you can possibly get.

Now the question is, how do I choose the perfect travel insurance and what are the factors I should be looking into?

The Travel Insurance Checklist

Before you finally make your decision on a travel insurance, here are the checklist you need.
1. Destination Coverage

This is the most important factor that you should look into. For example, if you're traveling to just Europe, make sure the travel insurance include multiple destinations in the coverage policy. Always ask if you're uncertain whether the country your're heading is within the coverage.

Take Middle Eastern countries as an example, war zone countries like Iraq and Syria might not be under the insurance coverage even though it falls under the Middle East zone. If you know you're heading there somehow, google and ask for companies that are able to provide you with such service.

2. Know What are the Emergencies Coverage

Everyone travel insurer has different coverage policies. For an example, company A covers the losses that you'll face due to delayed or canceled flight, while company B might set a certain limitation or restrictions for you to claim your losses. Check with the company what are the conditions and types of emergency coverage that they are providing. It's better to know more than less. After all, you wouldn't want to pay for something that doesn't benefit you at the end right?
3. Check whether accident during sports activities are covered

If you know you're going abroad for sports activities like hiking, skiing or for extreme watersports. Check with the insurer whether this category entitles for any coverage if accidents happen. Also, ask if an accident happened while you're riding a bicycle is entitle for claims even though it's not entirely a sport. This is something that you shouldn't skip considering that you're exposing yourself to all the possible risk of incidents while you're on the busy road of a city.
4. The Validity of the Insurance

Most of the time, people who rarely travel will opt for a certain period of travel insurance as it's a slash of a price and it fits perfectly for the requirement for all the insurance they need. However, there are times where you travel without checking with your insurance company whether your insurances are active and effective. Before you travel, always dial up the travel insurer for your validity confirmation. It's better to be safe than sorry.
5. Know What's Not Covered

There is no insurance that covers everything, nothing in the world is perfect. Knowing what's not covered is the best prevention that you can get to avoid any bad incidents to happen. If you know that the loss of baggage is not covered by the policy, you should pay extra attention to where you put and store your luggage. Just in case any incident like these happened, you know how to deal with the problem and not to be panic.
6. Premium or Non-Premium Package

Decide on a policy depending on your likings and what are the risks that you're willing to take. If you have a higher budget, you might want to consider a package that covers a wider range of accidents if happened. Alternatively, if you know that you're going for an extreme travel journeys, opt for a package that offers you a better coverage rather than just the regular ones. However, if you're traveling casually, a regular package is good too go.
7. Third-party Insurance or a direct purchase from Insurance Company

I am pretty sure you'll come across an unbelievable insurance policy with overwhelming good benefits. Believe it or not, sometimes it's just too good to be true. I strongly suggest traveler purchase a travel insurance directly from the insurance company rather than going through a third-party like travel agencies. I've learned it from the hard way.

It was a year back when I bought my travel insurance through a travel agency due to friend relationship. I was unfortunately admitted to a hospital due to food poisoning. It took me more than six months to get my claims with the reason that the travel agency owes the insurance company a certain amount of money and the victims like me is unable to claim what I am entitled to unless they clear their bills. As a reminder, always make sure that you go for a reliable insurance company than choosing over a deal that never comes true.

Conclusion

These are some of the factors that you should look into. I am pretty sure you'll find the perfect travel insurance that you need and now you don't need to travel with worries anymore. Let me know if there are any other factors that you're looking into. Leave a comment down below, I am happy to know what are your thoughts.

I have trully been concerned and wondering about this. In case of the Philippines, if one is involved in a serious motor accident. Most hospitals will not cater for them unless hes insured of pays up front or something. I dont know why but i find this very brutal. But then again for them to have reached this decision, i am sure they have received foreigners without medical insurance and ended up with loss or something.
Mmhhh

It's really depending on the insurance policy. I find some of the companies require us to pays a sum of money in advance and to be claimed later on. To counter back this kind of unethical business tactic, I would suggest that ones read carefully before signing anything with the insurance company.

Hmmm. Never really thought of it..need to check prices as well

True, it's really depending on a person's need and their budget.

Thanks! This is useful information. Something else to be aware of is that certain credit card companies provide free insurance for travel things, so asking about that can help you save money on something you're already insured for!

Wow, I didn't know banks provide insurance as well. I need to check that out immediately :O Thanks for the info :D

What a great read here, and I especially loved your elaboration on knowing what's not covered in the insurance package. Living and working abroad has really pushed me to check on many matters, especially about insurance! Thank you for doing this post :)

Thanks for the great info. I am currently battling out withmy insurances to get a medical bill paid back for Greece!

Great advice @explorernations

I've had late connections and missed flights before and travel insurance has come to the rescue. My wife also broke her ankle in Bali and needed an operation while we were there, which was a little scary.

I have definitely benefit from having insurance in the past. Not everyone has had a good experience with it though.

Thanks for posting.
