RE: A Guide to Cutting Stony Meteorites
Thanks for sharing. I've been wanting to get into lapidary art and cutting my agates. The videos I've seen shows me it's a dirty and time consuming job. I can't say I have this kind of time but being able to do cut one of my stones every now and then would be nice. Been collecting some of the necessary equipment over winter and hopefully I can get something cut this summer. If I can cut one of my agates I'll be satisfied.
Thanks! Not all meteorites are the same. The difficulty in cutting them depends on the type. Iron is obviously the hardest to cut, but some of the stones can be tough also. The H-chondrites and highly-shocked stones can be very hard and resistant to cutting. Other types are softer, like Howardites and most Vestans - they are friable and quite easy to cut.
Seems you are very knowledgeable in your minerals! Thanks for the info! I can't say I paid much attention in Science class but plenty of time to learn what Lake Superior has to offer. My thoughts were to categorize each type of stone and the uses for the minerals it's made up of.
