Liposuction - Why it is better to think twice about it

In principle, adipose tissue can be suctioned off wherever it is located under the skin - subcutaneously. Liposuction is not a pure "degreasing process", but rather the harmonisation of the body contour in the sense of a "body shaping", which is why the ideal patient for liposuction is of normal weight and only wants to separate from diet-resistant fat pads.

Liposuction technique

The most common technique used today is tumescent anesthesia, where up to several litres of a mixture of sterile water, a local anesthetic and a little cortisone are injected under the skin. This technique has two effects: an up to 18-hour anaesthesia and a full suction of the fat cells, which can then be better detached from the connective tissue. By fully sucking the cells, the fatty tissue is converted into an emulsion, which can then be sucked off with special cannulae under slight suction. After the action, a compression girdle must be worn for about 6 weeks.

Risks of liposuction

In Germany, about 200,000 liposuctions are carried out every year with increasing tendency. The method is considered to be easy to learn, safe, easy to learn and therefore predestined for the outpatient sector. Nevertheless, complications can occur: extensive hematoma formation due to inadequate compression treatment, wound infections, indentations due to uneven suction that is too superficial, numbness of the skin, unintentional perforation of the abdominal wall, so that the suction cannulae end up in the abdominal cavity and can injure organs with the result of severe bleeding and peritonitis and fatty tissue. There are also deaths, statistically speaking 1 death per 5,000 liposuction. Lucrative additional income Not only full professionals such as plastic surgeons, but also dermatologists, ENT doctors and even oral and maxillofacial surgeons offer lucrative earning opportunities. The choice of the surgeon should therefore be carefully considered, as the complications that could have been avoided by a serious and professional liposuction procedure become more and more frequent: inadequate control of the technique, wrong patient selection (not every patient is suitable for liposuction), inadequate hygiene measures, suctioning out too large quantities of fat in accordance with the motto "quickly removed with the fat", which corresponds to a use of too large quantities of tumescent solution and thus an overdose of the preparations used for this purpose, inadequate postoperative monitoring and finally also the inability to detect and treat the complications that have occurred at an early stage, and to treat them. Beauty clinics are usually not equipped.
