स्वर्गीय रविशंकर गणेशजी अन्जारिया इस युग के महान सेवाव्रती महापुरुष थे । बाल्यकाल से ही उन्हें मानव समाज के सेवा करने की लगन थी । बचपन में ही उनके पिता का देहावसान हो जाने से परिवार की स्थिति अत्यन्त विकट थी ।

किन्तु मानवता की सेवा का अडिग संकल्प लेकर जन्म धारण करने वाले परम पुरुष कभी बाधाओं अथवा कठिनाइयों से भय नहीं खाते । वे साहस एवं दृढ निश्चय के साथ अपने लक्ष्य की पूर्ति के मार्ग पर आगे बढ़ते जाते हैं और विपदाएं स्वयमेव उनके मार्ग से हटती चली जाती हैं ।

श्री रविशंकर डॉक्टर बनकर मनुष्य सेवा करना चाहते थे । वे बम्बई गए । वहां के ग्राण्ड मेडिकल कॉलेज में प्रवेश पाने के लिए उन्होंने आवेदन प्रस्तुत किया किन्तु वे अत्यन्त निर्धन थे । वहां के अधिकारीयों ने कहा, “भाई, आप निर्धन हैं । निर्धन व्यक्ति यदि डॉक्टर बनेगा तो वह हमेशा पैसा कमाने की ही धुन में रहेगा । मनुष्य की सेवा वह कैसे करेगा । अत: आपको प्रवेश देना कठिन है ।”

किन्तु रविशंकर अडिग थे । उन्होंने कहा – “श्रीमन ! मैं निर्धन अवश्य हूँ, किन्तु एक मनुष्य हूँ । मनुष्य का सबसे पुनीत कर्तव्य, सबसे बड़ा धर्म मनुष्य की सेवा करना है । मैंने यह सेवा का व्रत लिया है । आप विश्वास कीजिए, मैं धन का लालच आजीवन नहीं करूँगा और मानवता की सेवा में यदि मेरे प्राण भी चले गए तो उन्हें सहर्ष समर्पित कर दुँगा ।”

रविशंकर की यह लगन, उनका यह चरित्र देखकर अधिकारी प्रभावित हुए, उन्हें प्रवेश मिल गया और एक दिन ऐसा भी आया कि जब वे डॉक्टर बन कर उस कॉलेज से निकले ।

इसके बाद डॉक्टर रविशंकर द्वारा मनुष्य सेवा का अटूट क्रम ही जारी हो गया । उन्होंने अपने जीवन में दीन-दु:खी रोगियों की तो अभूतपूर्व सेवा की ही, साथ ही समाज में घुसे हुए अनेक रोगों को दूर करने का अथक प्रयास भी वे निरंतर करते रहे । उन्होंने जिस स्थान पर भी नौकरी की, वहां से वेतन के अतिरिक्त कभी किसी व्यक्ति से एक पैसा भी फीस या अन्य प्रकार की भेंट के रूप में नहीं लिया । गरीब रोगियों के द्वार पर स्वयं जाकर उन्हें औषध दी, उपचार किया और उनकी सेवा की । अनेक बार प्लेग जैसे भयानक छूत के रोग फैलने पर भी उन्होंने अपना स्थान छोड़ने का विचार तक मन में नहीं किया और अडिग रहकर रोगियों की सेवा करते ही रहे ।

एक समय वे राजकोट की मेडिकल लेबोरेटरी में नौकरी करते थे । उन दिनों राजकोट में भयानक प्लेग फूट पड़ा । सैकड़ो परिवार प्लेग की चपेट में आकर विनष्ट होने लगे । स्वयं रविशंकर के परिवार में भी लोग बीमार पड़ गए । लोगों ने उन्हें बहुत समझाया कि वे ऐसे भयानक समय में राजकोट छोड़ कर अन्य नगर में चले जाएं । किन्तु ऐसा व्यक्ति जिसने अपना सर्वस्व ही मानवता की सेवा के लिए अर्पित कर दिया हो, ऐसे कठिन समय में मनुष्यों को दु:खी छोड़कर भला कहां और कैसे जा सकता था ?

डॉक्टर रविशंकर लेबोरेटरी में कार्य करते थे । उनके लिए यह आवश्यक नहीं था कि वे प्लेग के रोगियों का उपचार करते । किन्तु मनुष्य के दुःख को देखकर द्रवित हो जाने वाले रविशंकर घर-घर जाकर रोगियों का उपचार करने लगे । स्वयं उनके गले में भी प्लेग की गांठ निकल आई किन्तु उसकी चिन्ता किसे थी ? प्लेग का प्रकोप इतना तीव्र था कि गृहस्थ के घरों से मृत व्यक्तियों के शव को उठाकर ले जाने वाला भी कोई नहीं मिलता था । शव के साथ जाने वाले भी रोग की चपेट में आ जाते थे ।

ऐसे कठिन समय में ही सच्चे सेवाव्रती की अग्नि-परीक्षा होती है । इस अग्नि-परीक्षा में से डॉक्टर रविशंकर कुन्दन बनकर निकले । उन्होंने अपने जीवन की चिन्ता छोड़कर रोगियों का उपचार किया, शवों को स्वयं गाड़ी पर लाद कर श्मशान भूमि तक वे ले गए और उनका दाह-संस्कार भी किया ।

घटनाएं अनेक हैं । उन सबका वर्णन करने के लिए बहुत-सा स्थान चाहिए । संक्षेप में यही कहा जा सकता है कि डॉक्टर रविशंकर इस युग की मानवता के अनमोल रत्न थे ।

सामाजिक रोगों को दूर करने के लिए भी वे सतत प्रयत्नशील रहे । वे जब लगभग तीस वर्ष की आयु के थे, उसी समय उनकी धर्मपत्नी का देहान्त हो गया था । उनके लिए योग्य कन्याओं को कोई कमी न थी । हितैषी, सम्बन्धियों ने बहुत आग्रह भी किया कि वे पुनर्विवाह कर लें । उन्होंने यही कहा – “मेरी छोटी बहन विधवा हो गई है । यदि उसका पुनर्विवाह हो, तो मैं भी विवाह करने को प्रस्तुत हूँ । किन्तु यदि आप लोग एक विधवा को पुनर्विवाह करने को आज्ञा नहीं देते, तो एक विदुर को पुनर्विवाह करने का आग्रह करने का आपको कोई अधिकार नहीं ।”

इस प्रकार रविशंकर आजन्म अकेले ही रहे और अपने जीवन के अन्तिम क्षण तक पूर्ण रूप से निर्लोभी रहकर दीन-दु:खी मानव-समाज की सेवा के महाव्रत का पालन करते रहे ।
