Having a good old giggle can do wonder for not only your stress and anxiety levels, but also for your entire body. Laughter creates hormonal changes as well as physical changes within the body, it enhances your mood, and the mood of those around you.
The physical act of laughing is almost like taking your insides for a little run, a mini workout even. Muscles throughout the face and body stretch, your heart rate is boosted, your blood pressure rises, you can become short of breath, happy chemicals are released into the system, and more oxygen flows around your blood stream. Not only that, a recent university study has claimed that laughter can also burn calories, as many as fifty within just ten to fifteen minutes. So with all these changes occurring, we can safely say that laughter has some real mental and physical health benefits!
We have all heard the term "laugh until it hurts", and there is some truth in the statement. If you laugh for long enough you can certainly feel the strain puling on your stomach, back and facial muscles as they contract with each movement that laughter creates, giving you the feeling that you may well just go and "split your sides"
