Is believing in cryptocurrencies really that difficult?

in #life8 years ago

When I first heard about Bitcoin I thought it was nonsense. I don’t know why I thought this, I just assumed it. I never researched it and never looked into it back then. This was my opinion straight away.

When I read the news that Bitcoin had broken $100 I thought these people must be insane to pay this for a stupid digital coin.

But something and I don’t remember what (and it bothers me) made me look into it deeper one day. I wanted to understand where the value came from.

When I did, it blew my mind.

I bought my first BTC in 2013.

Went for a walk near the river yesterday.

The user experience of buying my first BTC wasn’t great at all. It was crap. I didn’t really know what I was doing installing a wallet, downloading a blockchain, fiddling with public and private keys, buying 1 BTC from some dodgy website (that’s now really great). Having this BTC sit in my wallet with no-one to trade it with.

But when the value went up I quickly bought some more. I earned around 2300 euro in 5 weeks. Yes, you can say I was hooked from that moment.

Nowadays I am no longer financially hooked to crypto. Although it's still fun to see my portfolio go up.

But I no longer see cryptocurrencies as speculative vehicles (with the right projects). I do believe they will transform the world. I'm strengthened in my opinion because I can slowly see crypto technology maturing. It's also becoming more mainstream slowly.

Today I listened to an hour talk on a Dutch radio station about Ethereum! (I think that's major).

It's easier now

I guess from a point of view of someone that is just learning about cryptocurrencies today it is still a lot of trouble trying to figure everything out.

But I can tell you that the whole space is a lot easier to use now than when I started and there is a lot more functionality.

Shapeshifting coins into other coins is a blessing. Having easier wallets to manage all your coins. STEEM that just uses usernames for transactions to just name a few.

This whole process will continue to evolve to a point where you won't even know you are using blockchain technology.

me
My dog had a great time.

I did stop trying to convince others.

I am more enthusiastic about crypto than I ever was. Yet, I talk about it less and less. I used to start conversations trying to teach people about this new technology. But only 2 actually bought some.

Now, talking about it, kinda makes me feel like a Jehovah's witness. I'm sure they have as much faith in what they believe as I do about crypto technology but I still kinda ask them to leave when they knock on my door. Kinda what my friends and family do when I mention crypto.

I guess part of the reason I also keep it more to myself is that investing in crypto today can be pretty expensive. When I bought my first bitcoin it was $250 (my first ether was $2) wich is doable for most. and fun. Nowadays it's a bit more for those projects.

Yet, there are still projects out there with massive potential that are still affordable. But it comes at a price. You really need to educate yourself in this space to find them and understand them. But not everyone is willing to do. But it's so worth it and a lot of fun.

Steemit in that regard is a blessing to me. It's a whole platform with like-minded people. Just yesterday I invested in a new project (here) that was recommended by a user here. That's so valuable. I'm very grateful for this platform.

It's like you're reading my mind, bro. In fact the person who got my into crypto way back in 2014, actually joked about it as some cultist fad and strange scam they read about.

Interested, I decided to look under the rock for myself then and uncovered a completely different story. Hence a fascinating new world was revealed to me and I've never viewed "money" in the same way ever again!

It's been a crazy ride for me too and I'm still learning new insights every week. Meeting you on Steemfest as a result too. It's awesome. Thanks, man!

Believe me, the feeling is absolutely mutual, bro.

this was cute.

I would love to research other crypto coins and possibly purchase them, but I simply don't have the time. I am just going to play it safe and try to keep my Steem wallet growing. Something great will come of it in time!

I believe Steem is a good investment too! And a lot of fun to use as a huge bonus!

Yes, it really is fun!

If I had know about Bitcoin a little early. I would be rich by now 😥

I knew about Bitcoin in 2011 and was interested. I'm not rich despite that.

Even in early 2013 I tried to buy some when it was just $10. It was really hard to buy Bitcoin even then, and I failed. Maybe for the best, because I was trying with Mt. Gox...

I too try to buy some in 2011 but wasn't able to. I wish I had succeeded thought but never mind. If I'd be a billionaire I'd still be doing the same thing today, using Steem to better this world.

Yeah well I am from India and even if I had 10BTC back then it's value would have been 1000000+ right now in INR which is a lot in my country.

Problem is, how would you have bought it? At that point it was already getting difficult to mine it, required special GPU's at least. It was possible to register with and buy on Mt. Gox, but not exactly easy, and in the end loads of people lost all their Bitcoin on that exchange.

Oh I see. I did not know that it was this complex.

I heard a lot of this Mt. Gox from a post I read today in steemit. What to it anyway? If you don't mine.

It was the first Bitcoin exchange and for many years almost all Bitcoin trading happened there.

However it was a shady operation. It was insolvent after a while either due to hacks or an inside job. It went bankrupt and everyone using it lost the Bitcoin they kept there.

Oh, scary. Thanks for the info.

Only if you had held them which back then must have been very difficult. I have much respect for the people that held their bitcoins for 8 years! Such vision!

Maybe steem will rise too! Who knows if 1steem>1BTC one day!

Why not!

I really enjoyed this article:

Quote: "Steem can currently process more than 100k transactions per second as opposed to around 7 for Bitcoin."

I believe I can fly 🐬

:)

To the moon maybe 🙃

The moon sounds great!

Good Read! I agree with you on so many levels

it has definitely changed my life. I'm never going back. I can't.

It has changed my life too @stellabelle

Shapeshifting coins into other coins is a blessing
yes

Very interesting times and new ways of doing things!

It sure is!

Same here, I'm a total ignorant about bitcoin. I just learned about it when I joined steemit last July 2016. Steemit gave me this opportunity and even though that I still don't have the desired bitcoins, Im still grateful because I already knew about.

My regret is that I was not able to stumble this crypto during my early days in the net. I was so stupid, I felt stupid. Hope it's not too late.

It's not too late. There is still time to learn and maybe invest in good projects. Creating content on Steemit is a very awesome way to earn cryptocurrency. In fact, I think it's my favorite way.

The couple i live with 1st heard of bitcoin in 2011, it was worth $30 they said. they didn't buy any.Coming to live with them in 2015 and me talking about it, they regretted not getting any back then till now.

As always in hindsight everything is easy!
