How to get to know new people
Do you want to have more friends? Do you wish it were easier to talk to others? You're not alone! Many young people feel the same way. Here are some tips to help you meet new people.
Perhaps you feel shy or find it tough to approach someone you don’t know. Maybe you just moved to a new city for school and don’t know anyone yet.
Connecting with new people can feel overwhelming. It's normal to worry about being rejected or not being liked. Negative thoughts can easily take over, even before you reach out. But often, people are happy when you make the first move. They might have been waiting for someone like you to start a conversation.
Take the chance. Be brave. You might face rejection sometimes, but remember: “If you don’t try, you can’t win.”
Ready to give it a shot? Here are five tips for making new friends:
Practice small talk. Asking questions can help break the ice. You might ask about their favorite TV shows, plans for the weekend, or hobbies. Listen carefully, and you might discover shared interests. Keep the conversation light and fun; it’s not about finding deep solutions—just enjoy the moment.
Keep practicing. If you wish you were better at starting conversations, remember that social skills can be developed. Practice reaching out. Talk to people and try again tomorrow. You’ll find it gets easier over time.
Face your fears. Acknowledge what holds you back—fear of rejection. Ask yourself: “What’s the worst that could happen?” Is it better to stand alone or risk talking to someone new and possibly making a friend?
Find others with similar interests. It’s often easier to connect with people who share your passions. This could be sports, hobbies, volunteering, or any activity. The key is to find a shared interest to build upon.
Look for places where you can meet people.
