Mental Health: Living With Intensity… and Vanishing Into Thin Air

When a flame burns brighter, it also runs out faster

Have you ever had a friend — or perhaps the following has even applied to you, yourself — whom you always thought of as living life extremely intensely, and whenever you interacted with them it felt like they had the energy of a dozen people?

And even though you enjoyed being around them — and they were by no means a toxic or malicious person — you found yourself feeling rather exhausted after having spent any significant time around them?

Have you then experienced that same person suddenly "disappearing" into thin air not to be heard from again for months or even years, perhaps even after you've been interacting with them daily for a long time?

The thing about most people who live with a great deal of intensity is that they typically can't actually do it all the time without burning out. Consequently, they go through periods of being ”in” and periods of being ”out.” And it's quite natural.

Unfortunately, these swings from one extreme to another often subject them to those in their environment judging them and insisting that they are suffering from a mental illness; could be Bipolar Disorder or something else. Much of the time, that isn't actually the case.

However, those same swings do contribute to making life very challenging for them, and most of them end up in some form of entrepreneurial or consulting profession that allows a lot of freedom as far as scheduling goes.

I find myself writing about this today because I recently have been working with a counseling client who finds herself struggling to navigate life even though she is brilliant and quite accomplished.

If you relate to what I have written here, the first thing to know is to not automatically think that something's wrong with you. And simply knowing this fact might make your life easier because you can put aside a lot of the self blame you might carry.

Remember, there is no point in trying to repair something that is not broken!

Thanks for stopping in at my blog today, and Bright Blessings to all!
