Mission 24

 

Madagascar is a place like no other. An island adrift for 88 million years, 80% of its wildlife is found nowhere else on Earth—including lemurs. Over 110 species of lemurs call Madagascar home. They thrive in the unique “dry forest” ecosystem, where trees can endure months without water. Sadly, 80% of Madagascar’s forests have vanished due to logging and fires, putting these incredible creatures and their habitats at risk.

 

The Mission

 

Farmers in Madagascar often use fire to stimulate grass growth for their cattle. With 80% of people in rural Madagascar living in poverty, it’s one of the ways they can support their families. If deforestation continues at this pace, the island’s forests could disappear entirely by 2050. Thankfully, a new movement has been taking shape. We partnered with Planet Madagascar, who are protecting the forests and putting local communities at the heart of conservation.

 

 

 

 

Planet Madagascar is tackling deforestation while empowering local communities with a three-step plan. 1. Fighting wildfires. 2. Preventing future fires. 3. Rebuilding the forest. Thanks to the Planet Wild community, we funded crucial firefighting equipment, monitoring tech, and three years of salary for their program manager. In addition, we planted 30,000 new trees and built two new plant nurseries. Lemurs and other species will be safer from habitat loss while local communities can support themselves by protecting their environment.
