I am glad to see this contest and to tell the truth pancreas and its diseases are the most common what we come across during our oncall shifts.
Pancreas is an important organ and gland that has two functions:
Endocrine function and that means that there are cells that are producing Insulin and secreting them into blood, Insulin helps to use our carbohydrates for producing energy. In normal healthy person, Insulin produces when the blood sugar in blood stream going up and that usually happens when we eat. Any sugary stuff and frequent means will cause production of large amount of Insulin and if it continues then body does not manage to compensate and people may develop Diabetes.
Exocrine function when the glad produces juices for digestion and that is given through duct into bowel and help to digest mostly fat, sugar and starches into smaller and turn into the smaller particles that can be used as energy or stored for later when we need energy.
During my work in surgery we often see two big group of diseases:
Pancreatitis, that is an inflammation of pancreas, when it is swollen up and causing pain. There are few common causes of pancreatitis:
gallstone diseases
alcohol
some medication like steroids
increased level of blood fats
autoimmune, when our immune system thinks that it is a foreign tissue and attacking the glad causing inflammation
Inflammation of pancreas is quite serious condition, often may affect other system and cause kidney injury, affect lung and bowel and often require high dependence units and some time inpatient treatment may be lengthy up to 6 months and even one year
Another disease that we commonly come across is pancreatic cancer, that is often one of the disease that manifest in late stage when people present with jaundice and that is painless. Unfortunately, at this stage the cancer is advanced and the curative treatment is unlikely possible. We then often provide supportive treatment only and sometimes maybe placement stents in order to relief the pressure from bile ducts and treat jaundice, because that also can harm kidneys and cause kidney injury.
The medical doctors have another disease that many people suffer it is Diabetes, for young people it is a disease that they are born with but there are often elderly people who develop diabetes with years.
