I see it as a kind of "body building" If it doesn't kill you , it makes you stronger. Trial and error is in there too. Who to trust. Trust with what? There go those "expectations" again. My mother used to say, "Expect the worst and then be pleasantly surprised. Her way of navigating. I trust everyone that they will do whatever they will do. And that's about it. If it is a legal thing, just get it in writing and you stand a fair chance.
I am not so sure if that what doesn't kill you makes you stronger, if that were the case there wouldn't be so many broken souls.
What your mother used to say is a good one, not doom thinking but realistic plus she created the surprise factor. (another expectation LOL)
