RE: ❓Steemit Quiz 2025 - Week 3
Question 13
⚽ Sports 🏏
Each of the following clubs has won the European Cup, but which is the odd one out and why?
- Aston Villa
- Celtic
- Hamburger SV
- Man City
- Marseille
- Steaua București
Aston Villa played in the final only once, while the other clubs reached the final twice.
👉 VERY close… what’s significant about all of their other appearance in the final?
Unlike others, Aston Villa never lost a European competition final.
Edit:
They are also the only club who lost home league the same year they won the European competition.
✅ Correct - They are the only team in that list never to have lost a European / UCL Cup Final.
The answer was in alexanderkass's response. I still took help from my husband because I don't follow sports. It was good to learn a thing or two today. 😆
I’ve discovered a few things from people’s answers too!
Aston Villa has gone the longest without winning a national championship among these clubs.
👎 You nearly had it with your last answer. This answer isn't as close.
I think I know the answer.
If it's correct, I'll let you have it. Your answer's so close, I'm tempted to let you have the point anyway!
Aston Villa did not concede a single goal on their way to winning the 1982 European Cup.
In contrast to the other teams on the list on their way to the championship.
👎 Is that true? That can't be true... no... they conceded twice to Dynamo Berlin in the 2nd Round. I really wanted that to be correct. It's much simpler than that.
You're correct that it's Aston Villa and also correct that they've only played in one final.
HSV, because it is the only club that does not play in the first division of its country.
👎 Oh, I didn't realise that. Poor Hamburg.
No Problem. When I was interested in football, HSV was Deutscher Meister an I (little girl) in love with their star Kevin Keegan… 😉
Ah, King Kev. Great bloke.
Haha, I think I remember even the show... "Musikladen" - always cool stuff... ;-D
I don't think it was as successful as Glenn Hoddle and Chris Waddle... such a blessing that footballers stick to football now.
Marseille - it is the only club that won the European Cup after it was rebranded as the UEFA Champions League in the 1992/93 season.
The others all won it as the European Cup.
👎 Ah, I tried to avoid teams the won it as the rebranded version to prevent confusion. I’ll add Man City to the question.
Steaua București, because English clubs did not play this year and because they are the first Eastern Bloc club to win the tournament, and also because they won the final on penalties thanks to the goalkeeper
👎 I like it when I learn something with the answers 🙂
Steaua București is the only team that won its final (1986 against Barcelona) after extra time and a penalty shoot-out. All other teams won in regulation time. They are the only team that won with a two-goal difference (2:0). For the others, the difference was only one goal (4x 1:0; 1x 2:1).
In addition, the final took place in Spain, the home country of the opponent, Barcelona. All other teams were allowed to play on "neutral ground".
👎 I'm learning a lot from some of these answers.
You can't imagine how much I'm learning! And that's despite the fact that watching sport or reading about it in the newspaper (apart from handball) doesn't interest me at all...
Ah, handball. Another sport that doesn't get enough air-time in the UK. Probably because we didn't invent it. I wonder if the person who created thought...
"Hmmm, football. Hmmm. What's football missing? How can we compete with feet? 💡 That's it! Hands!! Hands are better than feet. But what to call it? I need a memorable name. Feet have football, what can hands have...? 🤔"
In the final match against Bayern, Aston Villa's starting goalkeeper was substituted due to an injury. Nevertheless, despite lacking experience in such games, the substitute goalkeeper delivered an outstanding performance. (As for the other teams on this list, they did not substitute their starting goalkeepers in the finals of the European Champions Cup, if I'm not mistaken 🥹)
👎 event-horizon got the final link - Of all of the teams, Aston Villa are the only team never to have lost a European / UCL Cup Final.
It was unexpected
