Medicinal plants - Hippophae

in Nature & Agriculture14 days ago

Probably one of the most ancient knowledge that mankind possesses is the knowledge of medicinal plants that surround us and in many ways it helped mankind cope with many ailments that periodically introduced their directives into the happy life of people.

There was a time when there were no family doctors therapists and surgeons but there were people who were well versed in the medicinal properties of plants and could tell how to use these plants and in what form for certain diseases.

I was lucky since childhood to have experience in collecting medicinal plants herbs and fruits and to have some knowledge about their use.

At that time there was a certain list of plants common in the region where I lived but there were those plants that seemed an unattainable luxury because they did not grow here.

But you know that plants migrate over time thanks to the people who plant them and one of such valuable medicinal plants that I could not find at that time but today it has become available is Hippophae from the Elaeagnaceae family.

In those distant times one day a parcel from relatives came to us filled with yellow berries with a very strange taste and it was sea buckthorn or scientifically Hippophae.

In those distant times one day a parcel from relatives came to us filled with yellow berries with a very strange taste and it was sea buckthorn or scientifically Hippophae.

I now often see such berries around on bushes that grow very tall and one of them grows not far from my house.

Then my grandmother divided the berries from a plywood box into two parts.

From one part she prepared sea buckthorn mashed with sugar and this yummy was a pleasant addition in the treatment of colds as a tonic rich in vitamins and Omega 3.

And from the second half grandma prepared sea buckthorn oil a very valuable product with a unique property of healing various kinds of wounds both on the skin and on the mucous membrane.

Even severe burns heal quickly after applying sea buckthorn oil to their surface.

You know I noticed that people are not very active in collecting free sea buckthorn fruits they prefer to pay money at the pharmacy but as they say we have freedom of choice.

In 1980 when the postage stamp that is in my collection depicting sea buckthorn was issued I was seven years old but I already knew quite well where and what medicinal plants were growing nearby and at about the same time the parcel arrived that gave me a real idea of this unique natural medicine in the form of berries from this bush.

It's wonderful to know that this plant, despite having so many thorns, can be used to cure various skin conditions! It's wonderful that your grandmother extracted the oil from it to heal wounds.I imagine this was a job to do! Good luck!

You are absolutely right in mentioning the thorns of this plant. Because of the thorns, it is very difficult to pick berries from the tree, and the pricks from the thorns take a very long time to heal.

As for the extraction of sea buckthorn oil, you are right here too, in those days there were no devices for its extraction, I only remember that my grandmother placed sea buckthorn cake in an ordinary nylon stocking and hung it over a container where drops of oily liquid were gradually dripped.

It was a long process.

Thank you very much for your wonderful comment and support!

Have a blessed day!
