Slum area is a major problem in most of developing nations.Not to mention, Indonesia as one of leading developing nations with 4th highest population in the world1. Slum area is characterized as a living urban space with heavily populated and low quality of life. It exists
in every corner of major cities across the country with different characteristic.Mostly, slum area in Indonesia are located adjacent to the river where people could get free water for their daily routines. The area often looks gloomy with rotten roof, bad housing installment and garbage problem.Nonetheless over time as people more aware of hygiene and more people getting proper education, great initiatives are spread like a wildfire.

One of a great initiative was started in a small village at Semarang, located about 10 hours drive from the Capital, Jakarta. The residents initiated to paint the houses into rainbow color to beautify the low-income area with a funding help from the local government. As cited from boredpanda.com ;

The goverment spent over $22k on the magnificent makeover in a bid to shake off its status as a degraded slum.

They repainted the houses and it took them about a month to repaint 200 buildings and naming it as " kampung pelangi" ( rainbow village)3.Similar initiative was also done in Yogyakarta, a city next to Semarang where they also repaint houses not only in vivid colors, but with numerous mural pictures.

Those places are now becoming social media frenzy where people visited to take a picture whilst also interacting with the locals. Not to mention that it also helps the locals earning income as food and souvenirs sellers.

Makes a big difference using bright colours. I truly believe it creates better vibes.

@markush

I actually pass the area almost daily xD and well, it doesn't really look as seen on the picture altho yes, it definitely creates a better vibe to the city. They're clean as numerous students project are being held there as it was low-income part of the city. I myself have taught a children over there as part of my faculty volunteering teaching program.

I see, yes I believe it probably needs more help then just a new coloured house. Step by step I guess

That's super cool you are helping these children there. Respect.

Good work by the Government !!!
