What are GMO foods : pros and cons

in #food4 years ago

Recently, many products have appeared on store shelves that contain GMOs - genetically modified organisms. So, for the production of flour products, GM starch is often used, chocolate is made on the basis of similar palm oil, and popcorn is made from GM corn.

Scientists argue that by adding genetically modified parts of animals and plants to food, they thus give people more options to choose the right products and reduce the cost of products. But how safe is such food?

It seems to me that no one can give an answer to this question yet. I know that various GMO studies have been carried out in laboratories many times. These studies have not yet revealed any negative consequences. But still, too little time has passed since the scientists had the opportunity to interfere with the natural course of natural processes, changing it for their own purposes.

In other words, it is not known how GMO consumption will affect our health in twenty to thirty years. Who can say for sure that a person will not develop any particular genetic disease? In my opinion, this is quite possible.

Still, the benefits of GMOs should not be underestimated. So, by changing the genetic code, scientists today manage to create plants that are more resistant to harsh climatic conditions. And then the need to use toxic synthetic fertilizers disappears, which, of course, is a big plus.

GM foods also provide food for the inhabitants of remote regions, giving them the opportunity to inexpensively buy everything they need. And this is really very important.

However, I believe that GMOs are worth eating only when there really is no choice. There are no analogues that have a natural composition, or there is simply not enough money for these analogues. In all other situations, it is better not to risk it again and take care of your health.
