From what I just read, it's a result of suppression and denial of whatever is causing stress, anxiety, discomfort, fear, etc. The mental realm of instability results in physical manifestations of instability, such as conversion disorder. I agree, cognitive dissonance and suppressing disequilibrium with reality can also result in physical manifestations of that instability.
