RE: Backfire Effect - Cognitive Biases (Pt.7)

What is your opinion on the topic of conversion disorder? I think it can be related to extreme cognitive dissonance.

Thing is, the first time I remember encountering the idea of conversion disorder is from the TV show House. They typically just mention it in passing during their diagnostics.

Apparently, conversion disorder used to be called hysteria, and the diagnosis was given to women who were "acting up."

Sort:

Check out coca-cola OG cocaine recommending their product for hysteria.

About conversion disorder, I don't know much. From what I just read, it's a result of suppression and denial of whatever is causing stress, anxiety, discomfort, fear, etc. The mental realm of instability results in physical manifestations of instability, such as conversion disorder. I agree, cognitive dissonance and suppressing disequilibrium with reality can also result in physical manifestations of that instability.

Conversion disorders, aka culture-bound disorders, are imbalances whose symptoms express themselves according to societal norms. Hysteria is a good example from history. PTSD, social anxiety disorder, and repressed memory syndrome are contemporary examples of culture-bound disorders.
