RE: Book Babble #14: "Flow" by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi

This phrase really struck me

What I 'discovered' was that happiness is not something that happens. It is not the result of good fortune or random chance. It is not something that money can buy or power command. It does not depend on outside events, but rather, on how we interpret them. Happiness, in fact, is a condition that must be prepared for, cultivated, and defended privately by each person. People who learn to control inner experience will be able to determine the quality of their lives, which is as close as any of us can come to being happy.

Control and interpretation. We have to will ourselves to control how we interpret and react to certain situations.

I normally count myself as somewhat depressed at times and so feel what you said about Psychology mostly focusing on the negative but there are a lot of these "life changers" like Simon Sinek that is bringing optimism of being good to great.

I always look for new book babbles from you.

Sort:

Exactly, that's the key… easier said than done of course but I guess that's all part of the 'game'!

I think if we are in the really negative space, then first getting to some sort of equilibrium would be what is required. Looking too far ahead could harm us. Then once we reach that point, we can look to improve to our full capabilities! Mihaly and Sinek among many authors, practitioners and personalities offer some great wisdom in this area.

It was more a case of the medical profession focusing on the negative side in decades past (without the influencers and access to information), whereas now, people are looking more and more to reaching their full potential and 'self-actualisation' as we progress and evolve (and have our basic needs taken care of).

Thanks, I'm glad to hear you enjoy my book babbling ;), I appreciate your support! More to come…
