Breathe Deep
As a physician,
I am aware
of some of the marvels of breathing. Every breath we take draws in several different gasses that make up our atmosphere. Each gas plays a role, but Oxygen is special. It fulfills many crucial needs without which life would be difficult or impossible.
Take a moment and breathe deep. Feel the air flow into the passages of your nose, throat, lungs – your chest opens, stretching the walls, flowing, filling, and stretching into each of the tiny air sacs in your lungs.
At this level, the Oxygen action shifts to the microscopic and chemical level. Oxygen crosses the barrier from your lungs into the blood, connecting with red blood cells, displacing toxic carbon dioxide, and invigorating the blood cells to vibrant, bright red health once again.
The blood carries Oxygen to the farthest reaches of your body. And at the cellular level, Oxygen does its most crucial work. It kills bacteria, provides nourishment, ousts toxins, and raises energy levels inside the mitochondrial organelles. The life-giving compound of O2 soaks into the most distant nooks and crevices of your body, bringing life and energy and health.
Take another deep breath, and envision the oxygen invading, displacing, energizing - performing its life-preserving functions.
The Holy Spirit isalso known as a breath.
The Holy Spirit also brings health, energy, and life. He takes the written Word of God, and turns it into the life-changing, living Word of God. He also displaces toxins, kills ‘negative bacteria’, offers creative solutions and wisdom, and reassures us of the righteousness God has created in us. As I surrender more and more fully to His work, He shapes my thoughts, sharpens my mind, and nourishes the seeds planted in my soul. Penetrating into the very matrix of who I am, He gently and persistently reshapes me into the image of Jesus, Himself.
Take another deep breath. Invite the Holy Spirit to come in, to fill you, to invade every deepest nook and cranny of your life. Feel your life expand, your energy rise, your vision sharpen, and your heart come alive as He displaces the old, bringing you new life day by day.
For much of my life I did not mindfully 'breath'. I regarded it as an automatic process the body took care of - and that it required no maintenance.
While I practiced martial arts, breath was just a way to coordinate muscle movements for greatest power.
Recently I began to study yoga. I turned my attention to my breath to completely exhale - and then to completely inhale as a way to expel subtle toxins from my body. And by chance, I noticed a change in my energy - a change in my feelings of inner peace.
At first I only practiced this conscious breath control within the Yoga class and attributed the improved feelings and emotions with Yoga.
Some time later, I began to extend this attention to my breath throughout my day - the sense of calm and focus continues through the day. I sleep better at night and awake refreshed. Relationships have improved, new friendships have sprouted and grown.
And it's directly because I'm aware of the slow, deep fullness of my breath from moment to moment.
