Naughty chick
This story happened this summer. A tiny kestrel came to us. He has not yet fully fledged. But this did not prevent him from feeling like an adult and independent bird!
One day he made us seriously nervous! My husband came and said that the baby kestrel disappeared from the aviary!
Here I must pay attention to two things. Firstly, it was a special aviary for chicks of wild birds. So, the grid in this aviary is with rather small cells. Secondly, the baby kestrel was still very young. He did not fly yet and could become a victim of cats or larger predatory birds.
I stood in the middle of the aviary completely bewildered. I had one question: HOW? I looked in every corner, dug straw, put my head in the house to the owl, risking that she would grab my hair. Baby kestrel seemed to have dissolved into the air!
After inspecting the aviary and all around it, we did not find a response or a bird.
But suddenly the kid was found. My husband fed the storks when he heard a sound in the raspberry bushes. When he looked in there, very proud little kestrel left the bushes and ran around the yard. After that, the kid was caught and returned to the aviary, but already in an extra large cage. We had no other version of his disappearance except that he was able to make his way through a hole three centimeters wide ...
That is well possible. The actual body (minus the plumage) of many birds is surprisingly thin. If you could see a owl naked, for example, you would be very surprised... :)
So you should consider the real small chichen wire - with 1cm holes or so - for such cases.
Little rascal :-)
