Wood burning a wooden mortar - photos + video of the process

in #art8 years ago

This pyrography post is about a wooden mortar. Join me as I make my design on this piece. My idea was of course to add spices to its exterior.

Here is the packaged wooden mortar and pestle received from my sister. I will be making some drawings only on the mortar and not on the pestle.

First I did my research to help me decide which spices I will pick as my models.I left out small spices like black pepper because I felt they would not look that nice. I picked something more complex in shape. Using a 2B pencil I made drawings of basil, ginger root, garlic, cloves, star anise and cinnamon. Any pencil traces can be erased with a rubber.

This is how the mortar turned out. After making the main lines of each spice I added some shading.

You can watch the whole process of me wood burning this mortar. It's at 16x speed. I was moving so fast the camera lost its focus sometimes.

Great burning action. I love your intricate designs!

Thank you! You can make your own design now that you have a pyrography tool :)

I know, I have been building up the courage to face it again lol!

Small steps then :)

This is so cool @anca3drandom
I am really impressed with the shading and fine lines, especially with a wood burning tool!

Thank you. For the shading you have to move fast, and not press hard with the tip.

I love the way you can take every day item's we don't tend to think about and turn them into something so beautiful, special and unique.
