Vicdanın sesini dinleyip savaşa katılmak istemeyen ama vatana karşı kendini mecbur hisseden Ferdinand 'ın yaşadıklarına ve iç sesine tanık olduk.

Yalnız şöyle de bir gerçek var: 'Stefan Zweig ve kadınları' diye ayrı bir başlık açmamız lazım. Kadın karakterlerin ruh halini o kadar gerçekçi ve yaşamışçasına aktarıyor ki. Bu kitapta da Paula' nın ruh halini okura hissettiriyor. Paula ve Ferdinan arasında gidip gelen anlatımlar çok güzeldi.
Bu kadar az sayfayla ne çok şey anlatmış yine Zweig...
