Word is the absolute worst. Are you required to use it? I find LibreOffice to be so much more functional and intuitive - and it's free whether you're on Linux or Windows.
Word isn't required per se, but certain formats are. I think, if I recall correctly, and it's been a few years so the rules might even be different now, it needs to either be a .doc, .html, or .pdf file.
