The Fraud

The Fraud

I knock twice on the sun-faded blue door and
Wait until an aging man appears in its frame.
Before I can mouth my inquiry as to my current
Location, he astounds me with a warm embrace.
He calls to his wife Hanorah, saying that Liz's eldest
Has made her way to the country to visit today.
I am ushered straight away into their parlor and
A petite silver-haired fairy kisses my cheek in
Greeting and offers to take my damp overcoat.
Through her squinting eyes, she assesses my
Countenance, announcing that I bear my father's
Nose, but in certainty wear the eyes of a Brodie.
She escorts me to the tiny kitchen nook bidding
Me to sit and calls for Elliott to pour us all some tea.
Something deep inside quells my desire to glance
At the clock....no one is expecting me for hours.
I listen to their chatter as we drink and note the
Love and occasional bit of lighthearted sarcasm
That passes between this pair; my heart grins.
I haven't the fortitude to expel a misunderstanding
As the afternoon winds into evening with faded
Photos and anecdotes that truly cause me to laugh.
Dinner is served up on her fine china making a
Notable contrast to the humble decor of their home.
An unlikely trio, we clean the kitchen afterwards
While singing a round of some old Scottish tune;
I struggle with the wording, but manage to keep
Abreast of a quiet harmony hummed with enthusiasm.
With an overfull belly and a lump in my throat,
I bid them goodbye and promise to stop by again soon.
Smiling, I watch as they wave from the cement stoop
Leading up to their home; and my fingers toy with
The gifted pendant around my neck as I back my
Sedan into the country lane wandering into the night.

I liked this although it wasn't quite what I expected. For some reason, it reminded me of a time when I was at a bar and a girl mistook me for someone else and came and talked to me for like 45 minutes before she realized it. It was a funny experience. Anyway, thanks for sharing this story.

Thanks so much :)
