Oh, and thanks for reSteeming! It is rather hard to get things to pick up here.
It helps a lot to to interact, not just on steemit but there are few discords and steemit.chat , it helps people see you around , in fact steemit is one big fat popularity contest. Main things to remember are , post, comment a lot with good thought out or sincere comments, and vote everyday (you have 10 votes a day)

And obviously steemit.chat , which is great just for random chats and help with your account .
Thanks very much for a stupendously useful reply! If I might trouble you for one more thing, I seem to be doing something wrong in trying to get reply notifications. I use Firefox, and I have gone to the notifications settings and tried to add steemit.com, but it does not find the site...
No one really uses steemit itself for anything other than to post I think, personally I use busy.org as it has notification built in , and always have steemworld.org open which is also going to release mentions etc soon.
As for desktop notification I think you can use this https://steemit.com/steemit/@revo/steemnotify-me-steem-notifications-in-your-browser-update
But I am happy with my busy.org , steemit and steemworld.org combo.
