Chapter 14 He Jumped Pretty High
The weather was in the mid seventies and pleasant making Monday a little more enjoyable. Jake and the others had a hard time focusing in class. Holding class in a building that was completely surrounded by class makes it very difficult to listen to lessons, especially during a snowstorm in the winter, or the warm weather in spring.
Jake nearly leapt of out Dr. Fisher’s math class as she dismissed the class. “I need to go throw a Dolbin ball as far as I can,” Jake said rushing down the hallway.
“Can I join you?” Brad asked, walking a few feet behind.
Jake glanced over his left shoulder. Surprised to see Brad talking to him, “Um—sure. I’ll message Bruce to bring one. I’m going to get my lunch and eat it out on the Quad.”
“Where are you guys going?” Maggie asked running to catch up with Brad.
“Outside to the Quad to throw around a Dolbin ball.” Brad replied.
After bringing their lunch out onto the Quad Jake and Bruce began to wolf down their lunch. Brad sat down and ate his lunch at normal speed, “You are going to hurt yourself eating that fast.” Brad said to Bruce.
“I want to play some before we go to PE,” replied Bruce with a ham sandwich hanging from his mouth. He shoved rest of the sandwich and chugged a bottle of water. He stood up, picked up the Dolbin ball that he brought with him, he jogged about twenty yards away from Jake and Brad. Jake finished his lunch and stood up. Brad continued to sit and enjoy his lunch.
Maggie joined them. She sat down next to Brad, “You guys zoomed out of there didn’t you.”
“Sorry, we don’t have a lot of time before PE,” said Bruce.
Twenty yards away, Jake clapped his hands and put his hands up at his chest. Bruce pumped the ball the twice, and then threw the ball like a bullet. The ball hit Jake hard in the hands. Jake zipped the ball back to Bruce. Jake turned to Brad, “I thought you wanted to throw as well.”
Brad paused, and then quickly finished his sandwich, wiped his mouth, and stood up. Brad put his hands up, waiting for the ball, “Here, throw it to me.” Bruce leaned back and floated the ball at Brad. Brad caught it easily. “Oh, throw it harder.” Brad threw it harder back to Bruce. The ball made a loud pop as it hit Bruce’s hands.
Bruce smiled, “Okay!” He turned and jogged a few more yards away from Jake and Brad. Bruce zipped it Brad, He caught in his hands, but the force of the throw pushed him back a few feet.
Jake raised an eyebrow, “You okay?”
Brad took a breath, and then nodded his head. “Yeah, I’ve fine.”
“Throw it here,” Jake replied to Brad.
Brad threw the ball hard. “Ow!” Jake shouted he shook his hands. “I’m only a few feet from you, you don’t need to throw it that hard!”
Brad shrugged his shoulders, “Sorry about that!”
Jake glared at Brad as it threw the ball back to Bruce.
Mark, Red, Cal and Henry walked up and joined the other three. “We were wondering where you were,” Mark said, as he sat down on the grass.
“Yeah, I felt the need to get out and throw a Dolbin Ball as hard as I could. The weather was too nice to be inside.”
Red joined in throwing the ball with Bruce, Jake, and Brad. Cal, Henry, and Mark relaxed on the grass enjoying the warm breeze. Maggie enjoyed the weather by reading a book.
Jake glanced at his watch, “I hate to say it, but it’s time to head to Banner’s class.”
“Here, throw it me one more time,” Brad called out to Jake.
“Go long,” Jake motioned the direction for Brad to run. Brad ran thirty yards down and Jake rocketed the ball towards Brad. The ball was screaming towards Brad but headed over his head. Brad leapt six feet into the air, caught the ball, and brought it down. Landing with a thud.
All the other boys looked at each other in shock. “Are you okay?” Jake shouted, as he and the rest of the boys ran toward Brad.
Brad stood up, shock himself off. “Of course I’m okay.” Brad replied. “Why wouldn’t I be?”
“You jumped pretty high there and landed harder ,” said Mark
“I am a Healer, remember?” Brad smirked. He brushed off his arms and legs.
“We know,” Red said.
“Come on, we gotta go to class,” Brad tossed the ball to Bruce and ran to get his stuff. They all headed to gym class.
“Was it me or did he just jump six feet in the air?” Mark whispered to Jake.
“He did. He jumped pretty high,” Jake whispered back.
