Steemit Witnesses, from my perspective.

in #witness7 years ago (edited)

Lately, I have read a lot of comments regarding Steemit Witnesses.

A lot of people think they are paid employees of Steemit, or there is a huge monetary benefit to becoming one.

Witnesses are people just like you, who decide for a variety of reasons that they would like to support the community. Some of these reasons are selfless, and some; Selfish.

Of course, I would love to sit here and tell you that the number 1 reason I am on Steemit is that I am philanthropic; But this is not the sole reason. I am here, like you- To try and create a better future for myself, and my community. Myself first.

Charity starts at home, and the sooner people accept this as not being selfish, the better off we will all be. For instance; The more successful I am, the more I can give back to the FIlipino community via my Witness projects.

In my opinion, there are 3 different Witnesses

  • Technical Witnesses (Create different programs like Steemd, Steemnow, Steemvoter)
  • Social Witnesses (Run contests, hold events, provide support)
  • Silent Witnesses (Those who maintain a server, but are not active on the platform)

I am a social witness. I have projects planned for a certain community and am working on a smaller yet more personal scale. Since I have lived in the Philippines for over 5 years now- And have received such a warm welcome over this duration; In my heart, I want to help this budding, struggling community.

I see its potential and would love to be apart of its success.

Right now, my witness rank sits at 96. This means I am only a backup Witness, and receive one block per day. One block is worth about 0.97 Steempower, so you can do the math on that. For the record, I pay about 150 SBD a month for my server and its maintenance.

There are many technical reasons why Witnesses are crucial to the success of Steemit; They are responsible for maintaining and securing all the servers which handle all of our data. Every upvote, every comment, and every SBD you send within, or off platform... Runs through a Witness server.

This is what keeps Steemit secure, and decentralized. With a corporation like Facebook, which started innocently as a way for college students to stay in touch- Has now turned into an absolute money-grab. Every 5th post is a sponsored ad, and your information is sold to the highest bidding companies.

If Steemit wanted to make changes like we have seen with Facebook over the years, there would have to be approval from the top 20 witnesses, before these changes are made. When members of the community disagree about major changes, this causes a hard-fork which can change everything.

So, when you vote on Witnesses-Always vote for those that you believe have your best interests in mind. Cast your vote for community members you can trust. Witnesses that make Steemit a better place, and are there for you when you have questions or concerns.

As part of my Witness pledge, I still vow to never power down my Witness account. I see Steemit 10 years from now being a rock-solid community, where those who stuck with it from today- Will reap the benefits together in the future.

As always, I preach to reinvest 100% of your earnings back into yourself. It is not worth powering down now, when Steemit is still in beta. I am expecting some excellent news coming from Steemfest, and we should expect to see a huge boost in the community following this.

And if you believe I will be a good Witness for Steemit;

First of all, thank you for your kind of helping others. I hope you won't pass on someone that need help even though they're from somewhere else!

Greetings @rcarter.witness Do you think Steemit has what it takes to be one of the top 10 global social media platforms?

We do! Are you willing to help us do what it takes to fix steemits vulernabilities so we can bring this platform to the mainstream?

I represent an media alliance with over 10 million followers. We see that steemit needs a few small, but very important changes to make it to the next level.

Please share your solutions with us! And help us attract the attention of steem developers. Share your wisdom and thoughts with us at

I wish my friend to enter my publications and support me. I support you in all your publications

I need help sir.....

Upvotes me & thanks.....

I will put you also to my witness...

Thanks for the support.

Are you in Cebu for the conference I am organizing?

Rob

No, I'm not... I'm from CAVITE... I'm working here in Abu Dhabi right now...

This is really great but for most of us looking to start this up to support our communities, it's rather difficult to maintain given the cost as you have stated. You use see the maintainance cost being reduced any time soon

You could maintain it yourself, for free :)

The information is also free, on how to setup a Steemit server.

Check this blog for more information... https://steemit.com/steem/@someguy123/your-guide-to-setting-up-a-witness-server-steem-in-a-box-hf19

And if you need help with setting it up, join the witness channel on steemchat.

Witnesses that make Steemit a better place, and are there for you when you have questions or concerns.

Many thanks for this post!

Recently, I read a post by @lexiconical who is doing an ongoing ‘remastered’ catalog of the witnesses.

One of the best takeaways, for people too busy to research the integrity of candidates; thus nominating the best witnesses, is to take a few seconds to assign a proxy, a trusted Steemian versed in these matters, who will select 30 witnesses with the best future for the platform in mind.

Again, thanks for sharing!

Peace.

Yes. This is great advice, I myself, haven't used all of my votes yet.

Need to start paying a bit more attention!

Rob

Yes, I am hopeful that a host of witnesses speaking in similar accord will help bring about much of the change so many Steemians are suggesting.

If each Steemian, either took the time and voted for 30 witnesses, or better yet, designated the voting to a trusted proxy, I think developers would more readily make suggested improvements that would help Steemit keep pace with other platforms.

Steemit has competition; and, many people are finding their way to other platforms which have fewer glitches, while offering more perks (i.e. busy's sliding up vote scale for all of its users).

We can't make it personal; because, I'm sure the developers realize it's just business. Most users have hopes of it surpassing FB in numbers; but, action must keep up with hope for this to happen.

Thanks for your reply.

Peace.

Thanks for sharing! A link to your post was included in the Steem.center wiki article about Steem Witness. Thanks and good luck again!

Hello @sunnylife,

I'm having a blast in Barcelona now :) I will go to Madrid next week.

How have you been?

Rob

oh good your having fun there ! all is well. busy working.
Hope to hear all your trips soon. Is @purepinay back in PH?

Yes, she is. Her sister is visiting her there now :)

All this time I thought I am already following you. It turns out that I'm still not. I am now. You had my vote since you first announce it. Thanks for the support to the community especially the Cebuanos.

Mabuhay!

Thanks for that, I appreciate the support. Just travelling a bit now, so haven't been super active posting. A lot of reading though!

Rob

Don't you just love it when you are in a @booster bidding round with......

Haha,

Well, if its any consolation look at my payout from them ($31.33)

I hope using @booster did better for you. I will check your blog now.

_Rob

Cheers :)

Naa I made a loss today - normally make a little off a $5-7 bid - depends who sneaks in after me with a whopper!

The most I would send booster/bellyrub is $15 if you wish for a profit.

Your $45 is 3 quarters of the max vote amount, so you'll never get close to a $45 vote with the other $50/$60 that's been sent in also.

$31 is a nice rep boost though!

I was watching the votes, and saw a $47 get a full 100%. In my block, I thought I was going to take the prize. Haha.

And you are right... although I'd like to have made the full 45, holding now will be worth that much later.

Thanks for the tips..I'll definitely have to pay more attention.

Rob

We all think so, hold for the gold. I love holding Steem power, and even if the boys don't profit us financially right now, they are good 'investments' for later. Would be nice to get to 70 rep by next March/April when the first SMTs are released and Steem(it) goes mainstream 😁

Thanks for the nice ups in this comment thread, have a good day!

sir im new ples my voting thanks sir

also as a i side, i think you paying way too much for your server hosting per month, you can get it much cheaper. i'll be setting up a few witnesses in 2018 in different geo locations around the world because i believe the platform is gonna need it! :) have a great day.

I hope so! That would mean SMTs have nailed it!

Hello,

Yeah. I could pay less, you are 100% right. I am paying @privex for a 64GB dedicated server, and also paying @someguy123 $40 SBD/month to maintain it for me.

I do have a plan to run my own server, but I travel a lot lately, and my current residence is in the Philippines. Not a great place to host since there are so many intermittent power outages.

But please, keep me up-to-date with your progress. I also have a few people that are interested. I agree 2018 is the year for us here :)

_Rob

every year is the year. it's just the other stuff always needs to fall into place to make it the year! :)
