RE: Witness Update: minimum_account_creation_fee

in #witness-update6 years ago

I very much disagree with this change. The majority of the account creation abuse that I am aware of came from either (1) the byteball airdrop; or (2) the steemit faucet.

In the case of (1), it has already been addressed by byteball and also changing the fee to 0.2 or 6 STEEM wouldn't have done anything because it would still have been very profitable to abuse.

For (2) it's actually worse because if the majority of the top witnesses update to a 0.2 STEEM fee then steemit inc will have to delegate double the amount of SP they are currently delegating to new accounts created through the faucet.

This will give abusers double the SP they are currently able to get. So in effect this change will be helping faucet abusers and doesn't seem to prevent anything as far as I can tell. Please let me know if I am wrong here.

Hey matt, I understand your concern regarding the double-delegation amount - it's a valid argument.

And I think it's healthy to have a debate about it and that's why a majority of witnesses are needed :)

Now, there are cases where users are creating puppet accounts themselves, without using Steemit Inc. and that's of course a lot cheaper currently, than it was when Steem was priced higher.

But I'm interested in hearing opinions about that matter from more witnesses.

Yea, I think it's a matter of which happens more often - people abusing the steemit faucet or people making puppet accounts using their own STEEM. My guess is it's the steemit faucet, in which case this change will make things worse.

Also we need to consider how this will affect legitimate users and sites/servers that create accounts for people. I'm not saying it's necessarily a bad change, but I haven't seen much research behind it other than "it used to be 0.2 STEEM before when the price was at this same level".

It's funny that one of the main vectors of "abuse" is a centralized entity that processes most account creation on what's supposed to be a "decentralized" blockchain. Also, don't current stakeholders benefit from higher account creation minimums...

Guess we won't have real discussions of how to actually retain users and grow past 100k users until such a level of activity won't throttle the network, so it may all just be moot points for now.

It's about making sure that the network can't be abused by people creating thousands of accounts due to the low price.

Nah! @charitybot. I suspect this rush to increase from 0.100 STEEM to 0.200 STEEM the minimum_account_creation_fee by witnesses, Bidbots owners/operators with an approval vote and in general, every 'bug with nails' with stake 'authority' within steemit and the steem blockchain on these matters. Is just an optimistic proposal by these specimens to have the ability to squeeze up the shell and suck asap from the public pool with a bigger straw as much steem juice as they can, filling their already large bellies with exponential amounts of that juice before Tuesday, September 25, at 11:00am EST.

Before the new RCs schemes to create steemit's accounts make disappear a few teeth to their current forks to carve more wealth through their 'private' endeavors. };)

I didn't say what you're quoting, so you're replying to the wrong person.

Ah C'mon @charitybot... ¡That's obvious that you didn't say what I am quoting!

It was that with your reply you simply served a formidable bread bed on the table so that I filled it with my tasty extravagance to make a 'yummy' sandwich that everyone can gobble with gluttony!!! };)

Well, as long as more people can see the real reasons anyone would do any of this, I'm fine with that.

¡That's the spirit!

Cheers!! :)

It will be interesting to see where this debate goes when HF20 (Velocity) goes live on the mainnet, with Resource Credits and the new account creation system it is yet to be seen and from my perspective it is way too early to know which one is the right call to make.
For the moment @humanheart will keep its account creation fee at 0.100
