The wisdom of Jesus: But Jesus bent down and started to write on the ground with his finger. John 8:6
The gospel of John tells a story of Jesus that shows the wisdom of the son of man, this story is known as the encounter of Jesus with the woman caught in adultery (John 8:2-11). The wisdom, the apostle John taught at the beginning of his gospel, is the most excellent and perfect knowledge, and this wisdom was also personified in Jesus: "The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us" John 1:14.
Jesus, as a doctor of wisdom, was a guided, enlightened, and inspired person while he was physically in the world. But Jesus was not arrogant and only demonstrated his wisdom when it was absolutely necessary, because wisdom does not attend to happiness or personal selfishness like the virtue of prudence but to the greatest good which is God and truth. A wisdom despised by its enemies, the Pharisees and the doctors of the law, but absolutely necessary for those who seek the spiritual gift of eternal life (contemplative activity).
The gospel of John relates that the enemies of Jesus sought to set a trap for him and so they presented him a woman who had committed adultery, and told him that the penalty for that sin was death, the gospel of John then describes Jesus' response:
"But Jesus bent down and started to write on the ground with his finger. They kept demanding an answer, so he stood up again and said, ´All right, but let the one who has never sinned throw the first stone!´ Then he stooped down again and wrote in the dust.
When the accusers heard this, they slipped away one by one, beginning with the oldest, until only Jesus was left in the middle of the crowd with the woman" John 8:6-9.
Jesus, inspired by the love of God (Agape), forgave the woman and saved her life because wisdom seeks correction and not condemnation. Jesus demonstrated with this story that wisdom, more than riches, is the most important gift that man can receive.
