Level 5 Hurricane Irma is going to hit Florida with a direct hit!!!
Florida air travel starts to shut down before Irma directly impacts the state.
Hurricane Irma's impending landfall in Florida is forcing airlines serving some of the largest airports in America to suspend function and get out of the way of the powerful storm.
Irma has already wrecked airports, buildings and roads in the Caribbean and has now targeted other areas. . St. Maarten, a major international destination for U.S. and European carriers, was in ruins after the storm. Photos from the Netherlands Ministry of Defense showed its runway covered in sand and widespread damage at its terminal building and jetways.
By late Saturday, Miami, Orlando and Fort Lauderdale - home to the 12th, 13th, 21st largest airports in the U.S., respectively - will be largely dormant as the extreme weather rolls in.
Miaimi-Dade county is going to open 13 more shelters Friday in addition to the existing eight shelters. You can find information about where they are here Friday morning. Miami-Dade Transit buses will provide transportation to the shelters starting at 7 a.m.
