Reasons for the Russian war

The Russia-Ukraine War officially began on February 24, 2022, with the large-scale invasion of Ukraine by Russian troops. However, tensions continue to decline significantly.

The main factors that led to the outbreak of war:

  1. Annexation of Crimea in 2014: Russia had already annexed the Ukrainian peninsula of Crimea and supported separatist movements in eastern Ukraine (Donbass region).

  2. Geopolitical interests: Russia sees Ukraine's western orientation and its rapprochement with NATO and the EU as a threat to its security interests and sphere of influence.

  3. Historical claims: President Putin repeatedly questioned Ukraine's autonomy as an independent state and emphasized historical and cultural ties.

  4. Pre-war demands: Russia demanded, among other things, guarantees that Ukraine would never join NATO and the demilitarization of the country.

Russia's official reason for the invasion was alleged "denazification" and the protection of Russian-speaking parts of the population in Ukraine, which is widely viewed internationally as a pretext.

The international community largely condemned the Russian war of aggression as a violation of international law and Ukraine's territorial integrity.
