New Delhi in India tops the list of countries with the largest share of global extreme poor though the poverty rate in southeast Asia as whole saw a substantial fall from 1990 to 2010, a new United Nations report said.With the total of 18 districts of Orissa included in the list of 150 extremely poor districts of the country, the state tops the set of data compiled by the Planning Commission on the instructions of the Supreme Court. The Apex Court has directed the Planning Commission to prepare the list of extremely poor districts in the country to provide them the required additional foodgrains. One of their initiatives that is creating entrepreneurs out of women is the Mukti Community Development Fund (MCDF) program. MCDF is targeted at women empowerment as it strongly believes that an ideal village is one where women have a significant role to play in decision making. And to make sure that women are not economically idle, MCDF was launched which enables women to pursue their own small businesses.People here face a lot of financial troubles as microcredit tends to have high interest rates here as the microfinance institutions (MFIs) that fund these loans borrow from banks at high interest rates. Apart from this, loans for basic necessities like sanitation, drinking water and vocational training are not easily available as they need to be at low interest rates. Hence, there is an urgent need for availing low-cost loans.
Seventy percent of India’s population – roughly one-tenth of humanity – live in the countryside. This makes rural India a focal point for issues of national and global concern: the impact of high population and development on natural resources; lack of sanitation and its impact on health; water pollution from raw sewage and pesticide runoff; soil loss and desertification due to erosion, overgrazing and deforestation.A village is a grouped human settlement or community, which is usually lesser than towns and a population of about 1000 at maximum. These parts are often referred to as rural areas. In the past, villages were a community where people practice subsistence agriculture. But as time progressed, the villages transformed and are now the centers for many economic forums. When someone says village, the first thing that comes to one’s mind is poverty. But you may be impressed that there are many rich villages in India, which are also the richest in Asia. These villages are very prosperous and have preserved the essence of rural life within.Once struggling to get basic electricity like most villages in India, Dharnai has now changed its fate and become the first village in India to completely run on solar power. Residents of Dharnai had been using diesel-based generators and hazardous fuel like cow dung to meet the electricity requirement for decades, which were both costly and unhealthy. Since the launch of Greenpeace’s solar-powered 100 kilowatt micro-grid in 2014, quality electricity is being provided to more than 2,400 people living in this village in Jehanabad district.
