BANGER OF THE WEEK: Secrets of Sand Hill Road

image.png

Sand Hill Road is known as the office venue of various venture capital funds, and probably one of the places with the highest concentrations of tosh in the local galactic supercluster. It features many names such as one might discern in the preferred stock listings of your favourite household-name startups like Facebook etc.

The book explains the basic functioning of the venture capital process - how it started in the 70s crooked very much in the favour of the VCs, but as time ebbed, fortune began to blow into the sales of the other party: the founders. Now, everybody is scared out of their wits of missing out on the next big thing, and the operative word there is "big".

Market size is constantly hammered on as the most important aspect of the unicorn investment - the best product in the world doesn't matter if the target audience only has a few millions in its pocketbook. Also noted are term sheets, various alphabet soup financial concepts and other useful things that don't warrant too much explanation.

Although it does not claim to be the "bible of venture capital," this book is the closest that I could find to such a thing. It explains eloquently and simply what is usually hidden behind thick veils of argot and trade-lingo. As such, it more than deserves my title of BANGER OF THE WEEK.
