Bookmark Sunday: These Are The Salad Days
Have you heard the expression 'your salad days'? Ever wonder what it means?
I did, so I looked it up and here is what Wikipedia has to say about it:
"Salad days" is a Shakespearean idiomatic expression meaning a youthful time, accompanied by the inexperience, enthusiasm, idealism, innocence, or indiscretion that one associates with a young person. A more modern use, especially in the United States, refers to a heyday, a period when somebody was at the peak of their abilities—not necessarily in that person's youth.
The phrase was coined in Shakespeare's Antony and Cleopatra in 1606. In the speech at the end of Act One in which Cleopatra is regretting her youthful dalliances with Julius Caesar she says:
...My salad days, / When I was green in judgment, cold in blood...
Huh. Now we know.
Moving on - it is Bookmark Sunday! The day when I organize my ever expanding bookmark bar by sharing a few choice bookmarked items with you - my favourite people.
The focus of today's Bookmark Sunday is - you guessed it - salads because it is unseasonably hot here today and a salad that eats like a meal is in order.
True confessions - I have not actually made any of these, which proves that all of my diligent bookmarking is really an exercise in futility.
But they look delicious and most of them are from sites where I know the recipes are always excellent.
I hope there's a salad here that inspires you. If you make one of these, let us know how it turns out.
Happy Sunday!
