by checking the official joomla website you will find that they dedicated a page to talk about this feature https://docs.joomla.org/Multiple_Domains_and_Web_Sites_in_a_single_Joomla!_installation , and that's mean your suggestion is not unique , and the people who are behind joomla already knows about this feature.
also joomla have many extensions that solve this problem you can find them here : https://extensions.joomla.org/category/multiple-sites/
