FreeCAD Greek Translation (Part 27 - approximately 1378 words)
Hello everyone! Let's start with the basics for the last time:
Repository
Project Details
As mentioned in my previous contributions, I have been on a new Steemit mission since @utopian-io & @davinci.witness launched the Translation Category, giving us the chance to offer our services and provide quality translations for various Open Source projects. As I have mentioned several times in the past few weeks, FreeCAD is my second project and I have been having great fun working on the translations of this software. FreeCAD is an Open Source AutoCAD competitor that runs on Windows, Mac and Linux, and supports various types of open file formats.
Open Source means true freedom; there are no limitations. What better way to assist scientific progress and development than with the creation of free powerful tools. And even though this is not news to many of you, it is worth noting that the most important advantage of FreeCAD is the fact that is is an Open Source project. As I have mentioned several times in the past few weeks, FreeCAD can be used by other programs as a library as well. Suppression of information can slow our civilization's progress down, that's why Open Source projects are a technological blessing of our times.
For more information regarding this wonderful Open Source project you can visit the the project's Official Website, as well as one of my previous contributions. If there's any specific kind of information you'd like to read about this project, please leave your requests in the comments below and I will undoubtedly do my best to provide all information necessary promptly.
Contribution Specifications
- Translation Overview
This is the final part of this task. As mentioned in almost all of my previous contributions, the utilization of too many technical terms is what makes this endeavour a lot harder than it may seem and that was the case in this part as well. FreeCAD is a large project that consists of roughly 31,770 words and I am more than proud to announce that I have finished translating its files into Greek. To be precise, I have now translated 29,832 words and cross-checked 1,938 words from previously submitted suggestions. My translation is now 100% (Hooray!) complete and subject to @ruth-girl's proof-reading.
- Languages
The current project was translated from English into Greek.
- In This Session
I checked all previously translated strings of the Sketcher.ts file before I started working on the remaining strings of this file, mainly due to the fact that this is another file that includes too many strings that were already translated and needed to be corrected. Then I started translating all remaining files (TechDraw.ts, Test.ts, Tux.ts, Web.ts) in order to complete this project in 27 parts and move on with my life. (Just kidding, Freecad, you know I love you.) Concerning the already submitted suggestions in all five files mentioned above, I spotted a couple of poorly translated strings once again. Some of them included errors regarding syntax and grammar, while others were just not properly translated. This was an exhausting part as I had to do a lot of research in order to come up with proper solutions regarding many cases where I had to literally decipher some strings. Working on this last part was a rather tiring experience, however I will stop whining right away. This is my last FreeCAD contribution after all. I love you, FreeCAD. :) On to the current session's mini sample.
Here's a little taste of the Sketcher.ts, TechDraw.ts &Test.ts files' strings that were translated in this session:
Inserts a Draft WB object
This string refers to a command that enables the user to insert an object from the draft workbench into the active document. Greek translation: Εισάγει ένα αντικείμενο Πάγκου Εργασίας Προσχεδίου
Export a page to a DXF file
This refers to a command that enables the user to export a page from the active document to a DXF file. Greek translation: Εξαγωγή μιας σελίδας σε αρχείο DXF
Hatch Image
This is a string that induces the need for technical knowledge. It basically refers to the image file that will be used for the creation of a hatch pattern on a given surface. Greek translation: Εικόνα Δημιουργίας Διαγράμμισης Επιφάνειας
Hope you enjoyed this mini sample. As explained before, the vast majority of the strings included in the files of FreeCAD induce the need for theoretical knowledge of various scientific fields.
It is more than obvious that this was another difficult part. As you can see in this mini sample I shared with you, technical terms are plentiful and this means that the average translator may not be qualified enough to complete this task successfully. The Sketcher.ts, TechDraw.ts and Test.ts files include too many unclear strings that induce the need for advanced theoretical skills regarding Geometry and Physics, making this a rather demanding task. Constant extensive research is absolutely necessary in order to accurately translate the files of FreeCAD, as the majority of its files' strings are poorly written and therefore can be quite confusing. Moreover, let's not forget about the huge obstacles that any translator will need to overcome in order to handle the files of FreeCAD; the FreeCAD wiki documentation is still incomplete, which means that many features and commands of the software remain unexplained on the web, plus there is no context available regarding the majority of its files' strings. It goes without saying that working on this project can be an exhausting process.
In conclusion, it was a hard day at the office. Matter of fact, it has been a couple of hard months at the office! Nevertheless, I managed to conclude this project successfully and without ever giving up. (I'd never do that!) I put a lot of effort into this and I am more than glad that the job is done. Since FreeCAD is a purely scientific tool, I always felt obliged to provide the most accurate translations. Let's always keep in mind that constant corrections kept taking place due to the fact that things were getting quite complicated as I kept moving forward. Of course these words were never included in my word count. I sincerely hope FreeCAD users will enjoy my work. Goodbye FreeCAD!
- Word Count
According to Crowdin, in this part I translated 1378 words (1435 as demonstrated on Crowdin, minus approximately 4% of those as untranslated words). I have now translated a total of 29,832 words.
