We could publish a new article on any study conducted on the effects of electronic cigarettes on health on a weekly basis, but we do not. However, if the results of a reliable scientific research reach us, we would like to invite you to the group.

Similarly, this new study pays attention to the possible dangers of e-cigarette vapors on heart cells.

The study - under the guidance of Dr. E. Farsalinos - published earlier this month in the "International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health", compared the possible negative impact the smoke of ordinary cigarettes and the vapor of e-cigarettes had on cultured heart cells.

Research has created an environment that produces the fumes as produced by a user. Popular liquids and e-cigarettes (vaporizers) were used with different voltages to mimic various situations.

The study showed that the vapor of e-cigarettes has far the same toxicity as the smoke of cigarettes. 20 different e-fluids were tested, most of which showed no adverse effects on the cultured heart cells: the survival rate of the exposed heart cells was statistically similar to that of non-vaporized heart cells.

Nicotine

The research focused on fluids with nicotine levels of 6 to 24mg / ml. There was no statistically significant difference in the results of comparable fluids with different nicotine levels. The finding that the survival chances of the cells could not be associated with the nicotine content in the e-fluid confirms previous studies that showed that nicotine ash is not toxic to the cells.

The taste

Nevertheless, there were 4 samples showing a reduced survival rate of the heart cells. These are 3 liquids in which tobacco leaf extracts are processed and 1 liquid with cinnamon flavors. According to the researchers, this confirms that any adverse effects of electronic smoking are all about the flavors that are processed in some e-fluids and not with the basic ingredients propylene glycol or glycerol. For quite some time already we already warned on this website for using cinnamon e-cigarettes.

Voltage

The production of vapor through high voltage devices caused a decrease in cell survival rates, yet the samples of vapor produced under high voltage were not cytotoxic.

Conclusion

Cells exposed to electronic cigarette vapor had significantly more survival chances than those exposed to cigarette smoke. Most e-cigarettes are not cytotoxic, regardless of the nicotine content. Some fumes - and this probably has everything to do with the flavors - can be harmful to health. It is therefore important that all flavors contained in e-fluids are thoroughly tested so that the user can make the right choice. In other words, there is still a lot to be done in the coming months, years ... before we fully know how the fork is in the steering wheel.
