Yes, I just unfollowed you

in #ulog6 years ago

I've been cleaning up my feed in the past few weeks. Not because of anything crazy, but it's simply that I've come to realize that when I first started on this platform I was just following everybody without giving it too much thought. Granted, some of the first accounts I followed on Steemit, like @tarazkp have remained as part of my regular content consumption, but most, have either stopped posting, or became something else entirely.

At some point in time I remember following close to a thousand people. This number to me at this moment sounds crazy high, simply because there is possibly no way I could ever read that many posts. Yes, I read a lot, I post a lot, but read ten times more. How else would I have things to talk about? think about it.

I felt compelled to write this explanation post just because I'm sure someone might be getting a gina notification wondering what just happened. I assure you that there is no ill intent behind the action, I'm simply attempting to be a little more honest with myself.

  • If someone is just resteeming, then Why am I following?
  • If someone just became a report bot, then Why do I need to see it daily?
  • If someone hasn't posted in 3 months, then Why would I follow still?

Now, I'm not saying I've not made any mistakes. There is a good chance that I unfollowed someone that I will end up following again, since its 1am at the moment and I'm being aided by some red wine. However, this little post, and all the caveats and couches, or better said the couched caveats I'm conveying are basically here to say - "If I unfollowed you, say hi.. maybe I messed up"

I'm starting to think that since I'm here to create an effective network and to learn, my efforts should be focused with those who share that particular little mission. In other words, even if someone is the nicest person in the world, but has decided to commit to selfies without a hint of interaction or effort, then I'm probably not too interested anymore.

As I'm writing this weird apologetic ramble, I'm remembering the myspace days. At some point in time I had thousands of accounts following the band, over 10k if I'm not mistaking. Needless to say, not one of them ever interacted with us. So, I'm trying not to make that mistake, making the numbers look good.

I'll pour myself another cup and surrender to morpheus and mr. pillow... but as I said, if you believed I failed a little bit with an unfollow, call me out.

Much love

Totally agree here. Sometimes my feed is full of resteems by different people. Or flooded with things that I have no interest in. I feel bad culling but I should! I suck at “unfriending” but maybe I shouldn’t think of it like that. It’s not Facebook after all.

you was one of my first ones i followed and you re still in my list and i think its was a good decision to do it :D

Yuss!!!!

follows and unfollows meno repeatedly

Get that feed nice and spic and span!

hahahhahahah what could effectively be the number of people you regularly read.. maybe it maxes out at 500 peeps or so... maybe.

I'm happy because you have not unfollowed me!!!

(But you have never followed me either) lol

oh, i will go checkout your stuff... clever comment, i do enjoy witty.

Hahaha, this is much more than I could expect!!! ;-)

Usually i unfollow inactive acounts, or accounts that are not related to my niche...

And i think thats good, that gives more chance to get exposure to those who are posting related content to me...

I only follow around 200 people, i see no point at following too many people! And i should go and make some following cleaning because there are some that i haven't seen in months and they will probably never come back....

With just 200 people that i'm following it's already a full time job, if i had more to follow i woudn't know what to do!

Man I dunno if you ever followed me. But heck I’m on a mission now to win you back lol

Seriously though, I completely understand the auditing of followers. I try to engage with everyone I follow but it starts to become a real j.o.b. to keep up lol

I don't think we have to justify who we follow. It's largely about what time you have to read stuff. I did unfollow a load of inactive accounts a while back. I know most of my followers are inactive, but it's just a number

im sure out of the almost 3k followers i got one 10th is real... the rest is bots and dead accounts.

I followed also about 800 people in the first month. Then I realized that I really don't like the content all of them created thus I started cleaning the list. It happens nowadays also that I follow someone and then after a few weeks to realize that I don't like his/her posts anymore and unfollow so I don't see that as a problem. A real problem would be to keep your feed cluttered with tens of posts from people you no longer read and interact with.

Hi meno. Should do it out of habit at least once a month. You are correct in saying that people change and there is nothing worse than having 100's of resteems going through your feed. It is about finding the right balance.

i think the excessive resteems get me... one account resteeming 40 posts in a day... it happens.

With you 100 there bud
